How the option helps the Redskins

I was rewatching some of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings and wanted to make a quick note of how the misdirection from the triple option can fool opposing defenses.

This play began with 6:06 left to play in the first half against a very solid Minnesota defense.

Clearly we all know Robert Griffin III is the straw that stirs the Redskins’ drink. Here is visual evidence that shows how his amazing athletic ability helps fool one of the better defenses in the league. This is what happens when you have the right pieces involved along with the ability to mislead based off of that talent.

Things I Think I Think I Know

Does my title confuse you? I am calling this things that I think I think I know, because they are preseason lamentations, and reaching solid conclusions from such vanilla observances, can often be sticky. They are things that I know that I saw, I just don’t know how much weight that can be granted, given the overall practice nature of the NFL’s preseason.

1) Kirk Cousins has a future in the NFL. He put on an impressive performance on Saturday night against the Bears, tossing three touchdowns, and shredding the Chicago defense time after time in the second half. Pretty impressive for a guy seeing his first real NFL game action. He looked poised and comfortable, and really seemed to have a firm grasp of his reads, and the Redskins offense.

Kudo Awards: Will Montgomery

If you’d have told me at the end of 2010, that I’d be giving Will Montgomery a Kudo Award at the end fo 2011 – I would have probably told you that you were mad. And yet here we are.

Montgomery may be the most improved player on the Redskins roster in my humble opinion; he is certainly the only player that I used to consider a liability, that I now consider a growing asset. He and Chris Chester were the only two offensive linemen to start all 16 games for the Redskins. Montgomery briefly moved over to left guard when Trent Williams went out injured at tackle (yes I know that sounds crazy – but that’s what the Redskins did). He didn’t fare as well there, but perhaps a more accurate assessment would be that the Redskins OL didn’t do nearly as well when Monty wasn’t playing Center.

Thoughts On Redskins vs. Dolphins

Well, as some of you may have seen, I tweeted in the early hours of Sunday morning that the Dolphins wouldn’t care for the QB controversy that the Shanahan’s created because it wouldn’t matter in terms of their preparation overall. If they could score first, they could play pass defense the rest of the game, and they would win. Well, that proved to be the case.

Mid-Week News and Notes: Levi and LJ

Redskin fans are definitely beat up this week, but hopefully the team can build off of a little second half success last week against the Falcons. While they may still have lost the game 31-17, the offense put together a couple of drives in the third and fourth quarters, that were as sharp as they have looked in all of 2009.

There will be one big offensive change on Sunday against the Broncos, Levi Jones will be getting his first start at left tackle. Redskin fans seem quick to dismiss this move as futile because Jones failed to catch on with a couple of teams earlier this season, but I don’t see it that way at all. The Redskins need some personnel ‘luck’ with the state of their roster, especially the offensive line, so if Jones can come in and play well, he could prove very ‘lucky’ indeed. In my opinion, Washington need to sign four offensive linemen before the start of 2010, so if Levi plays well, he could turn into one of those players. He really only has to be better than Stephon Heyer to make it worthy of serious consideration.
