By the Numbers: The NFC Playoff Picture (updated)

Here’s an update to last week’s HogWire which looked at what would happen if the NFL playoffs had started last week:

#1 Last week the Detroit Lions were the only NFC team not in the hunt for one of the six annual post season spots, this week they are still the only team not in the hunt, although the Philadelphia Eagles are doing their best to join them. The Eagles 36-7 lost to the Ravens on Sunday dropped them to 5-5-1 and behind every team in contention for a playoff berth with the exception of the Green Bay Packers who fell to 5-6 after giving up 51 points to the Saints.

Hognostications Week 12

Congrats to RiC for winning last week’s hognostications with a record of 11-5.  It’s starting to get very crowded at the top and it’s still anyone’s to win.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we have the true experts here in hognostication land.  After 116 games we have several with a 68% record … Read more

Early Play-Off Look For Redskins

Its definitely too early to really make play-off predictions, but Steve Wyche did so any way. There’s no real surprise information here. Obviously, he has the Giants, Panthers and Cardinals as locks, since all three of these teams are the class of their division, at least as it presently looks in the standings. He also lists Tampa Bay as being “In good standing.” Again, no surprise. They are 7-3 and playing pretty good football.

Vote The Redskins Ticket Surprisingly Effective

For anyone living in a cave in the DC area, or those who aren’t quite as lucky to live close the their favorite team, the Washington Redskins have been putting on a rather subtle campaign to put as many of the Burgundy and Gold in the Pro Bowl this year as possible.  Let’s just say that, at least as far as the fan voting is concerned, its working.

As of November 18, the Redskins boasted four of the top ten overall vote getters. Clinton Portis is second behind only Drew Brees with more than 450,000 votes. Following Portis, Chris Cooley, Santana Moss and Jason Campbell are fifth, sixth and ninth respectively. Now let’s break down the individual positions for the NFC squad:

The Redskins’ Anti-Discrimination Fan Policy in Action

You have to admit, the Redskins have a little something for everyone.  It’s like a buffet at your local Chinese food place.

You’re an optimist?  Great, come on in and grab a cupcake (with happy face frosting on top!).  We’ve got a 6-2 record at the mid-way point of the season – good for second place in the best division in football, Clinton Portis is tearing up defenses, Jason Campbell hasn’t thrown a pick yet, our defense is ranked 6th in the league, and apparently we picked up another star wide receiver named ‘Santonio’.

Pessimism is more your style?  Swing by and grab a drink from our half-empty glass.  Despite our record, we’ve barely squeeked by two teams that we should have crushed, and lost to a winless team – at home, no less.  Our defense is riddled with injuries, our draft picks are invisible, and our defensive line push is more futile than that of a constipated old guy on the toilet.

The Redskins are truly an equal opportunity team when it comes to fans, trying to offer something to everyone, to please all types.  Hopefully, when this season draws to a close in whatever fashion it’s fated for, that balance between fodder for the optimists and pessimists will still hold true:

‘I know we just won the Superbowl, but did you see how crappy the defense played?’

That which we call drivel by any other name, would still be as random and incoherent….
