Jayden Daniels’ dispute with LSU escalated this week, and now Washington’s franchise quarterback reportedly wants his name completely disconnected from his alma mater.
The Jersey Dispute
Daniels’ attorney sent LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry a cease-and-desist letter on August 5, obtained by ESPN. The letter informs LSU it’s no longer authorized to use Daniels’ name, image, or likeness. The dispute traces back to LSU issuing Daniels’ former No. 5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett.
Former head coach Brian Kelly had kept No. 5 out of circulation after Daniels left, despite it never being officially retired. New head coach Lane Kiffin says Pickett was promised the number during recruiting in December 2024, before Kiffin took over. Pickett wore No. 3 last season and switched to No. 5 this year.
A statement from Daniels’ family didn’t hold back. LSU’s decision, the family said, “feels profoundly disrespected.” Pickett responded calmly when asked about it Thursday, saying simply, “I wish Jayden the best.”
Reports of a Heisman Request
According to Louisiana SportsDaniels’ camp also asked LSU to return its copy of his 2023 Heisman Trophy. LSU has no plans to comply and considers the cease-and-desist letter non-binding, per the same report.
Daniels won the Heisman at LSU after transferring from Arizona State ahead of the 2022 season. He went on to become the number two overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Daniels Breaks His Silence
Daniels addressed the situation directly on Thursday afternoon, posting to his Instagram story. He confirmed there are “issues to be worked out between my team and LSU,” and said he hopes it gets resolved “privately.” He added that his focus right now is training camp ahead of the 2026 season.
What’s Next
Neither side has signaled the dispute is close to resolved. LSU hasn’t indicated it will return the Heisman or reverse Pickett’s jersey number, and Daniels’ legal team hasn’t withdrawn its cease-and-desist letter.
For now, it remains an offseason distraction Daniels says he doesn’t want following him into camp.
