Redskins Rookie Quarterbacks Honored

Robert Griffin III was just named named 2011 Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year. The award is given to the student athlete that “displays an extraordinary degree of sportsmanship and/or community service during the academic year.”

On top of being the first Heisman Trophy winner in Baylor history, Griffin has been setting the standard off the field for even longer. According to the Big 12’s Press Release about the awards, on top of being an ambassador for the entire school, Griffin, “was also a Special Olympics volunteer and served at Friends for Life, a daycare for mentally-challenged individuals. He has also volunteer and spoke at many local schools. Other community service projects include Santa’s Workshop, Food for Families and greeting new students for the Baylor admissions office during the annual on-campus celebration of Dia del Oso.”

Shanahan passed out and his heart stopped beating for a half minute. He was given last rites. He was unconscious for five days and his playing career was ended by the blow.“

Tuesday Hog Wash

As Redskin fans spent Monday pouring over article after article about the Redskins mini-camp that came to a close on Sunday, one thing that seems painfully obvious, Robert Griffin III blew the doors off of his first NFL on-field assignment.

Sunday was the first opportunity that the media were granted access to Mini-Camp, so all eyes were focused squarely on the new Redskins quarterback, and that usually means just one thing in Washington – scrutiny. And yet in a city that seems to love to hate as much as it loves to love, very few souls seem willing to venture out into that gentle abyss and rock the RGIII boat – at least not yet.

Robert Griffin III got his first opportunity to woo the Washington media and fans on Saturday at FedEx Field, he did not disappoint. Asked about everything from Redskins history to Redskins future, here are some of his comments:

On the attention he has already received…

“I went to a signing in Chantilly and saw 7 different variations of my name on a shirt, so I kind of understand the anticipation, the excitement. You just gotta realize it’s about more than just one person. Quarterback always gets all the attention. He also gets all the criticism. So it’s not necessarily how you can take the praise and the attention. It’s how you can deal with the type of criticism you’re bound to get. I know this is a business. I have to be a professional. “

RGIII Thoughts

Been a minute since I blogged something – had some family strife to deal with, and life got in the way, but on a day of most significance to Redskins Nation, it seemed prudent to pen a few thoughts.

Well unless you crawl under a rock for the entire NFL offseason, you’re probably aware that today is the opening of the 2012 NFL Draft in New York. If you are under a rock, then you won’t be reading this anyway, so I’m going to presume that you know what’s what.

Today is the day that the Washington Redskins select Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick in the draft – a pick that they paid dearly to move up and get – but a move that they desperately needed to make.

What’s going on in Redskins Nation this week?

New Nike Uniforms
The Nike unveiling yesterday left a lot of people feeling unfulfilled. Seriously? When the veil was finally lifted, the Redskins uniform that was revealed was basically identical to the Reebok version. There are a couple of minor differences like the collar, the numbers on the sleeve and the sleeve cuts themselves. Reactions were mixed to say the least, ranging from, “Thank god we didn’t change anything,” to “Why can’t we have all gold uniforms with burgundy polka-dots?”

Griffin Not Doing Private Workouts A Sign?

People tell me not to ‘make anything out of’ Robert Griffin III not doing any private follow-up workouts for teams.

Why not?

I don’t care who Griffin turns down for private workouts, there are only two teams in the running – the Washington Redskins and the Indianapolis Colts. The Redskins have stated that they didn’t need a private workout anyway, and had already seen everything they needed to see. Smart.

Hog Wire: Tuesday

There isn’t a lot going on in Redskins Nation right now, at least not much that wasn’t going on for the last week anyway. Here are a few non-updates:

London Fletcher – Zip. Zilch. Nada. Donut. So stop asking me. There isn’t any new news, but frankly, every day that Fletcher is a free agent, oddly, both sides gain leverage. London gains leverage because with Curtis Lofton going to the Saints, there really aren’t a lot of options left in free agency at inside linebacker. The Redskins gain leverage because there obviously aren’t a lot of other teams throwing money at Fletcher, or he may have already departed. Unfortunately that means that the two may have moved into a stalemate. It’s easy to say, “Give him more money,” but the Redskins have little to spare after the cap penalty. Something creative needs to be done cap-wise because with what will likely be a fairly short-term deal of 2 or 3 years, there isn’t any time to pro-rate out bonus money. Time shares on Dan Snyder’s yacht?
