On this day in Washington Football history – September 16th, 1937 – Washington beat the New York Giants 13-3. It was opening day for the 1937 season, and 24,500 fans lined Griffith Stadium for what was technically the first ever Washington Redskins game. The season before, the franchise was still in Boston and called the Boston Redskins.

Mistakes Prove Costly For Redskins

You will often hear people remark that no one, single play defines a game, but it would be tough to deny that if you string even two or three really bad plays together, the result will be reflected negatively in the score more often than not. Such was the case on Thursday night in the Washington Redskins’ 32-21 loss to the New York Giants.

Obviously football is a complicated sport, and mistakes are going to happen on every play. That isn’t what we’re talking about. We’re talking about plays that are head-scratchers, or change the momentum of a game, or both as is often the case.

The Redskins were completely embarrassed by Eli Manning and the New York Giants on Thursday. Here are some of the more telling statistics and numbers from New York’s 45-14 dismantling of Washington:

449 – Total yards of offense for the Giants, to the Redskins 329.

300 – Yards passing for Eli Manning on 28 completions (40 attempts). He dismantled the Redskins defense, with 4 passing touchdowns, and also rushed for one himself.

259 – Total yards passing for Kirk Cousins.

Redskins Continue to Expand Coaching Search

With two interviews already in the books and two more occurring this weekend, the Redskins head coaching search 2014 continues to cast a wide net. Washington is gathering information on an extensive range of candidates. The comprehensive Redskins head coaching search 2014 reflects the organization’s commitment to finding the right leader after a disappointing season.

The Redskins reportedly interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell on Tuesday. The team confirmed it had interviewed Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia Friday. He has ties to Redskins general manager Bruce Allen from their time together in Tampa Bay. Washington is also reportedly interviewing Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott in Charlotte Saturday.
