If Vinny Were Here

I had a funny daydream about the NFL Draft that I wanted to share… I call it… “If Vinny Were Here.”

I found myself bemused by people still worried about the draft and the Redskins getting Griffin, and what on earth could possibly go wrong? So of course I thought of My Cousin Vinny.

RGIII Thoughts

Been a minute since I blogged something – had some family strife to deal with, and life got in the way, but on a day of most significance to Redskins Nation, it seemed prudent to pen a few thoughts.

Well unless you crawl under a rock for the entire NFL offseason, you’re probably aware that today is the opening of the 2012 NFL Draft in New York. If you are under a rock, then you won’t be reading this anyway, so I’m going to presume that you know what’s what.

Today is the day that the Washington Redskins select Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick in the draft – a pick that they paid dearly to move up and get – but a move that they desperately needed to make.

Torrence Returns to Redskins Secondary

Leigh Torrence was signed by the Redskins yesterday, four years after the cornerback left the Redskins to go and ultimately win a Lombardi with the New Orleans Saints. While the move didn’t exactly set Redskins Nation on its ear, it is the third signing in two days that was made to shore up some depth, and that made good football sense.

Torrence won’t likely challenge DeAngelo Hall or Josh Wilson for playing time, but he is a capable back-up, can play nickel, and is an excellent special teams player. He is also a respected veteran in the locker room – something that this now youthful roster can use a little bit of. There are currently more than 35 players under contract with the Redskins, that have less than four years of NFL experience.

Lee and Golston Inked

The Redskins made a couple of depth moves today, signing offensive tackle James Lee, and re-signing defensive lineman Kedric Golston.

Golston has been with the Redskins his entire six-year NFL career, and Washington knows exactly what they’re getting – a solid contributor that is versatile enough to back-up anywhere along the defensive front. He had 1.5 sacks in nine games last season before being put on injured reserve.

TGIF Photoshop: Skippy Baseless

If you’re a sports fan and you’ve ever tuned into the corporate big wheel that is ESPN, you’ve likely seen a face or two that just make you go, “Hmmmm.”

For me, that joker is Skip Bayless. I try not to be venomous about it, because it isn’t Skippy’s fault that he works for an employer that obviously encourages him to be as big a douchebag as is humanly possible. If Skippy wasn’t doing exactly what was expected of him, he’d be out in the cold. Instead – he’s front and center.

McNabb Been Hit With The Stupid Stick?

Every time I read something new that Donovan McNabb has said, a little vein in my forehead protrudes and I start to get this little headache.

I want to first say that when the Redskins brought Donovan McNabb to the team in April of 2010, I was initially kind of excited. After all, sure he was getting a little long in the tooth, but I had watched him beat up my team twice a year for most of the last decade.

We all know how that worked out. The result was me actually being marginally more excited when he left last summer, than when he arrived. I’m sure there are many in Redskins Nation that would share a fairly common experience with #5.

Hog Wire: 4/4/12

What’s going on in Redskins Nation this week?

New Nike Uniforms
The Nike unveiling yesterday left a lot of people feeling unfulfilled. Seriously? When the veil was finally lifted, the Redskins uniform that was revealed was basically identical to the Reebok version. There are a couple of minor differences like the collar, the numbers on the sleeve and the sleeve cuts themselves. Reactions were mixed to say the least, ranging from, “Thank god we didn’t change anything,” to “Why can’t we have all gold uniforms with burgundy polka-dots?”

Griffin Not Doing Private Workouts A Sign?

People tell me not to ‘make anything out of’ Robert Griffin III not doing any private follow-up workouts for teams.

Why not?

I don’t care who Griffin turns down for private workouts, there are only two teams in the running – the Washington Redskins and the Indianapolis Colts. The Redskins have stated that they didn’t need a private workout anyway, and had already seen everything they needed to see. Smart.
