Daron Payne Gets Slapped With The Franchise Tag

The Washington Commanders became the first team in the National Football League to use the franchise tag this offseason. They placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Daron Payne, which will hopefully keep him around for at least the 2023 season. The tag is worth a few Big Macs short of $19 million ($18.937), and will become fully guaranteed when he signs it.

The move comes just the day after the Commanders cleared almost $30 million from the cap books by releasing quarterback Carson Wentz and defensive back Bobby McCain. The team is projected to have approximately $35 million available, less the value of Payne’s tag.

Snyder Blocking Bezos From Bidding On The Commanders

Ever wondered what a spoiled billionaire kicking at the air like a young child would look like? Dan Snyder is doing it right now. Proverbially at least. Apparently Snyder is blocking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos from buying the Washington Commanders.

It is the adult rich-guy equivalent of, “I’m taking my football and going home.”

It’s petty with a capital “P”.

The Bank of America were hired by Snyder to help with the sale of the team, and they have told Bezos that he will not be allowed to submit a bid.

The reason for the block?

Jeff Bezos Hires Investment Firm To Aid With Bid For Commanders

This week, Jeff Bezos reportedly hired the investment firm of Allen & Company to help him place a bid on the Washington Commanders.  That is the same investment firm that helped the Walton-Penner group purchase the Denver Broncos last year, for $4.65 billion. They also helped David Tepper buy the Carolina Panthers in 2018.

The NFL would love for Bezos to be the one that buys Dan Snyder’s Commanders. He already has a significant connection with the league, with Amazon being the exclusive broadcaster for Thursday Night Football. Amazon made waves becoming the first streaming-only option in league history.

What To Know About The Commanders’ Offseason

The fourth summer that Ron Rivera has spent with Washington may be his most difficult one yet. The Commanders’ head coach is still managing chaos, including the possible tectonic shift of an organization sale this year, and he is still without a clear quarterback solution. Additionally, after firing offensive coordinator Scott Turner, Rivera was forced to make arguably the biggest coaching hire of his career in Eric Bieniemy.

For NFL betting fans picking their best bets of the day, the Commanders certainly provided some memorable performances, most notably against Green Bay, Philadelphia, and Dallas, but bettors may not be rushing to wager on Washington for the NFC East Division next season.

According to Rivera, the potential sale won’t have an impact on the front office’s capacity to assemble the team. In theory, the Commanders have enough salary cap room and a solid pick to strengthen the roster. So, what should we look out for?

Eric Bieniemy Named New Washington Commanders Offensive Coordinator

Many were considered. But from the moment the Kansas City Chiefs closed out the 2022 season with a Super Bowl victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, it seemed that the Washington Commanders really only had eyes for Eric Bieniemy. Today, he was named both the Offensive Coordinator and the Assistant Head Coach, and so began a new chapter for the Commanders.

Bieniemy agreed to a two-year deal that includes a “promotion in title and contractual structure,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

It also included a pay raise. He was not under contract with the Chiefs for 2023.

He will be introduced at a news conference next week.

Preliminary Look At The Washington Commanders 2023 NFL Draft

With only the Super Bowl remaining, 29 of the 31 draft slots for the NFL Draft have been determined.

Where will the Commanders select in 2023? As it stands, Washington will select sixteenth overall; however, anything can happen between now and that draft pick.

After all, the Commanders only have six picks. Compensatory Picks might push that number to eight, but they have a lot of holes to fill.

Candidates For The Vacant Commanders Offensive Coordinator Gig

Scott Turner was fired just over a week ago. In cutting that tie, the Washington Commanders are in search of a new man to lead their offense. That might be a difficult sell given the current state of uncertainty with the franchise. With a new owner on the horizon, there’s less job security in ANY Commanders coaching position than with any other job in the National Football League.

Nevertheless, the team have to find somebody to take over for Turner, and they have begun interviewing potential candidates. Here is a short list of the names mentioned so far:
