The Washington Commanders went into the 2022 NFL Draft having just six draft selections. They would make eight selections over the weekend, and a strong day on Day 3 would help them fortify a solid 2022 draft haul.
They parlayed their eleventh overall pick, into the sixteenth overall pick and two additional picks. A deal to move down with the New Orleans Saints, netted Washington a third round and a fourth round pick – 98th and 120th overall respectively.

The 2022 NFL Draft is upon us! The action will kick off tonight at 8pm in Las Vegas with the first round. The second and third rounds will take place tomorrow night, and the remaining rounds four through seven will go on Saturday.

The Washington Commanders have taken the opportunity to flex their legal muscles and try to beat down the latest ticket revenue scandal. Or so it seems. The latest public statement from the organization is making its rounds today, and once again, the public perception of it appears less than favorable.

The hardest part of following the Washington Commanders’ scandals, has become tracking them all. That says something in itself. The latest allegation is that Washington did not share home ticket sales with opposing teams. Is it true?
A report from A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports alleged that, “the Commanders did not pass along the required 40% share of ticket sales to visiting teams.”
According to the report, at least one person gave information to Congressional investigators in the House Oversight Committee. The Committee has been examining the finances of the team and owner, as well as the hostile workplace allegations.
Since the article was released, there have been some legal back-and-forths from both sides of the equation.

The biggest news of the off-season for Washington so far, is acquiring veteran quarterback Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts.
The writing was apparently on the wall. Washington couldn’t justifiably tag Brandon Scherff again in 2022, so he was expected to be heading somewhere else. On Monday, it was reported by various sources that Scherff would be heading to Jacksonville.
The 30-year old stalwart right guard spent the last seven seasons in Washington. He was named to the Pro Bowl five of those seven years. He is also the ONLY Washington player to be named an All-Pro in the last 26 years.
Terms of the deal were not announced, as the deal cannot become official until 4pm on Wednesday.
Washington’s desperate search for a quarterback came to an end on Wednesday. The Commanders reportedly struck a deal with the Indianapolis Colts for Carson Wentz. The deal will not be finalized until next week when the 2022 league year officially begins.
According to reports, Washington gave up a 3rd round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, as well as at least a 3rd round pick in 2023. If Wentz plays more than 70% of the snaps in 2022, that 2023 draft pick would increase to a 2nd round pick for Washington. The two teams also swapped their 2nd round picks in this year’s draft (Washington’s 42nd overall for Indianapolis’ 47th). Further reports today state that Washington will also receive a 7th round pick in the 2022 Draft.
Additionally, the Commanders will pay Wentz’ entire 2022 salary of $28-million-plus dollars.
How much money will Washington have to spend in their first season as the Commanders? According to yesterday’s reports, the 2022 NFL Salary Cap number will be set at $208.2 million. With the new league year starting next week, teams have just over a week to get in line with the cap.
The 2022 number is up more than $25 million over last year’s $182.5 million. That sends a slightly misguided message though, as the cap was dropped last season for Covid “losses”. It was the first time in its history, that the cap number had dropped. In 2020, the cap was $198 million, so the 2022 number is a gain of approximately $10 million over that.
That’s a decent increase that some teams will be desperately happy to see.
