Redskins Preparing for 2014 Free Agency

Entering free agency with an abundance of cap space gives the Redskins lots of options to fill plenty of needs and pursue their top Redskins free agency targets 2014. Even after re-signing cornerback DeAngelo Hall, defensive tackle Chris Baker, safety Jose Gumbs and franchising linebacker Brian Orakpo, Washington has significant financial flexibility to address roster holes.

The Redskins dropped off dramatically after a division title in 2012, returning to the NFC East basement in 2013 with a 3-13 record. That collapse, coupled with their $36 million cap penalty for 2012 and 2013, makes identifying the right Redskins free agency targets 2014 more important than normal.

Washington allowed the second most points per game (29.9) in 2013, meaning defensive players will dominate their Redskins free agency targets 2014 list. So who might the Redskins target to improve their roster? Let’s examine the players Washington reportedly has in their sights based on reports from local beat writers.

Redskins Continue to Expand Coaching Search

With two interviews already in the books and two more occurring this weekend, the Redskins head coaching search 2014 continues to cast a wide net. Washington is gathering information on an extensive range of candidates. The comprehensive Redskins head coaching search 2014 reflects the organization’s commitment to finding the right leader after a disappointing season.

The Redskins reportedly interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell on Tuesday. The team confirmed it had interviewed Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia Friday. He has ties to Redskins general manager Bruce Allen from their time together in Tampa Bay. Washington is also reportedly interviewing Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott in Charlotte Saturday.

Kyle’s Stubbornness The Only Safe Bet

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos rolled all over the Washington Redskins in the second half with 38 unanswered points, en route to a 45-21 destruction at Mile High Stadium. Last week the Redskins offense showed signs of coming around against the Chicago Bears, but on Sunday against the Broncos, they appeared to have hibernated. Or maybe they were just stymied from the top down.

Enter offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Why, oh why, do people try to put square pegs in round holes? This isn’t the first time that Redskin fans have been left scratching their heads as to what in the aqua blue hell was going on in Das Wunderkind’s brain – but it’s the first time for a while, that one might scratch hard enough to draw blood. I did anyway, and I may just have to remove the Redskins from my NFL football betting list if their offense continues to be completely paralyzed by their coordinator’s need to treat it like a toy. It’s a costly betting oversight most weeks.

Yeah, Not So Special: Another Redskins Heartbreak

Is there anything worse for a Redskins fan, than losing to the Dallas Cowboys? How about betting online AND losing a game largely due to the play of the special teams units? Sure there were plenty of other things to point to in Sunday’s 31-16 loss to the Cowboys, but you can’t give up (ostensibly) 14 points on special teams, leave three on the board, and not notice that it’s 17 points in a 15-point loss.

By The Numbers: Raiders

It was a big win for the Redskins on Sunday, despite being just the fourth game of the regular season. Going into the bye week at 1-3 might not seem all that majestic, but with the Eagles and Giants at 0-4, and the Cowboys at 2-2, Washington is very much still in the thick of things in the NFC East thanks to the victory, despite the slow start.

Here is a look at some of the more interesting, and telling numbers and statistics from the Redskins 24-14 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Most of these stats are from the official NFL stats, and I got the NFL betting lines at TopBet.eu Sportsbook.

PSA: Blogs vs Articles And A Walk Down Memory Lane

Way back when I began the site and we started writing about the Redskins in 2002, there was no such thing as ‘blogs’. We were just a few rabid fans that were sick of reading the rigamarole of everyday media, and in a new world of technology, thought it might be of interest to other fans to give our very lay, ‘non-educated’ viewpoint of all things Redskins. I remember people telling me that I was crazy to think that anybody would care what your average Joe said about the Redskins. Over time, we developed a following, almost a cult following of sorts, and I think people realized that we were actually a group of pretty educated fans, and that we had some fairly intelligent and informed things to say – and with nobody pulling our purse strings.

Best Loss Ever

It’s hard to keep your head up when your team is losing constantly – for years, I could never do it. I’d drag my ass around town until Thursday or Friday after every single Redskins’ defeat. Given the win/loss record for most of the last two decades – that makes for gloomy weeks and winters.

Over the years, my ability to ‘get over’ losses improved. Gradually I would be able to peel back that layer of disappointment more quickly, and not let a game’s result affect my well-being so much.
