Laremy Tunsil appears to have suffered a torn triceps during Saturday’s Washington Commanders training camp practice, according to multiple reports. The injury occurred during a 1-on-1 pass-rush drill against edge rusher Odafe Oweh.
What Happened
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported the injury, noting Tunsil “suffered a torn triceps in practice today during 1-on-1 pass-rush drills” (via X, Aug. 9, 2026). ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Garafolo both indicated Tunsil will likely require surgery and will miss at least a significant portion of the regular season.
It has been reported that Tunsil dealt with a bull rush before awkwardly disengaging and immediately clutching his arm and elbow, and he was taken to the medical tent for evaluation.
Recovery time for this type of injury typically runs at least four months to as much as six or seven. Which means best case scenario, he’s ready some time in December.
A Costly Blow for Washington’s Line
The timing stings. Tunsil signed a two-year, $60.2 million extension in March, and he’s widely regarded as one of the NFL’s top left tackles. He was the only Commander named in the top 10 of ESPN’s 2026 offseason survey of coaches and executives. Losing him leaves a potential major gap protecting Jayden Daniels’ blindside heading into the regular season.
This marks Tunsil’s second injury in less than two seasons with Washington; a hamstring issue cost him three games in 2025.
Who Steps In at Left Tackle
Andrew Wylie is a possible next man up. He took the first reps at left tackle once Tunsil left practice. Brandon Coleman, who started 12 games at left tackle in 2024 before Washington traded for Tunsil, is perhaps a better candidate. Josh Conerly Jr., currently at right tackle, could also factor into the shuffle. Wylie is more suited to right tackle if he’s going to factor in.
The injury comes during a camp that had otherwise carried positive energy, coming off a 2026 training camp opening full of optimism and shortly after Washington’s Stefon Diggs signing filled what some viewed as a critical need.
Free Agent Addition?
Top available veteran left tackles on the market include former Detroit Lions stalwart Taylor Decker, and experienced blind-side protector Cam Robinson, if Washington doesn’t feel that they can fill the position from within.
