Laremy Tunsil Contract Extension Reached, Avoiding Potential Distraction

Commanders Secure Laremy Tunsil with Massive Contract Extension

The Washington Commanders have avoided a potential contract standoff by agreeing to a two-year Laremy Tunsil contract extension with their star left tackle.

Tunsil’s business manager, Laolu Sanni of Divine Tree, confirmed the deal to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The extension is worth $60.2 million, including $61.5 million in guarantees and a $32.5 million signing bonus — the largest signing bonus ever given to an offensive lineman.

With the new deal, Tunsil becomes the first offensive lineman in NFL history to average $30 million per season.

Background of the Deal

Washington acquired Tunsil via trade last offseason, sending multiple draft picks to the Houston Texans (a third- and seventh-round pick in 2025, plus a second- and fourth-round pick in 2026). The Commanders also received a fourth-round pick in return.

After a strong 2025 season in which Tunsil anchored the offensive line in front of quarterback Jayden Daniels, General Manager Adam Peters publicly praised him as one of the best — if not the best — left tackles in the NFL. Peters had recently expressed confidence that an extension would be completed “sooner rather than later.”

The timely agreement stands in contrast to last year’s situation with wide receiver Terry McLaurin. The popular receiver held out of training camp and missed all voluntary and mandatory sessions before his own extension was finalized.

What the Extension Means for the Commanders

Securing Tunsil long-term provides much-needed stability on the offensive line as the Commanders continue building around Jayden Daniels. The deal also carries significant cap flexibility, with a reduced hit in 2026.

Tunsil, was the 13th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has earned five Pro Bowl selections during his career with the Texans before being traded to Washington. He is widely regarded as one of the most dominant pass protectors in the league.

Washington Commanders Peace Of Mind

Laremy Tunsil is now locked in through 2028. The Commanders can now focus on other roster needs while protecting their franchise quarterback.
