WFT Will Also Be Without Scherff And Six Assistant Coaches

The Washington Football Team has been flattened by Covid. While several players were reinstated yesterday, today saw the addition of Pro Bowl Guard Brandon Scherff, as well as six assistant coaches and a coaching intern. Until now, the outbreak in Washington had been limited to just players. But perhaps not surprisingly given the level of outbreak amongst the players, the coaching staff has now been hit hard as well. The team announced that the following assistant coaches are now on the Covid-19 list: Defensive line coach Sam Mills Wide receivers coach Drew Terrell Running backs coach Randy Jordan Defensive backs coach Chris Harris Assistant defensive backs/nickel coach Brent Vieselmeyer Defensive quality control coach Vincent Rivera The team will also be without defensive coaching intern Christian Garcia. It’s easy to just look at that list and not really see the full extent of it. It means that defensive co-ordinator Jack Del Rio, linebackers coach Steve Russ, assistant defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina, and assistant defensive backs coach Richard Rodgers, are all that’s left on the defensive side of the ball. Zgonina will look after Mills’ job at defensive line, and Rodgers will look after Harris’ job for the defensive backs. On the offensive side of the ball, Jordan will be replaced by Assistant Running Backs coach Jennifer King. Senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler will look after the Wide Receivers.

Scherff Too

Losing Brandon Scherff’s services to Covid is tough. Not only for his play, but for his steadying influence. With so many injuries throughout the line-up, his leadership and stability would have been helpful on Tuesday night.

Other Injury News

Washington did get some positive line-up news. Defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis was activated from the Covid-19 list. Montez Sweat and Sam Cosmi were also activated from the regular injured reserve list. The WFT defensive line definitely looks a lot better than it did a few days ago, when six of the top seven were out. Unfortunately for the Football Team, J.D. McKissic and Curtis Samuel were ruled out for the Eagles game. Tough news for Washington – especially McKissic. Washington’s Covid list also still includes quarterbacks Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke.
