Looking Back At The Washington Commanders 2022 NFL Season

It wasn’t a losing season, but it wasn’t a winning one either. It was a very mixed bag for the Washington Commanders in 2022. Despite an auspicious beginning, they were in the playoff hunt until the second last game of the season against the Cleveland Browns – a 24-10 defeat that dashed any hopes of a playoff game.

Who could forget the infamous comment from Head Coach Ron Rivera following the Browns loss?

“We can be eliminated?”

After the first game, it looked like maybe the Carson Wentz could work.

That didn’t last long.

Here’s a look at the entire season of events:

Ding, Dong The Witch Is Dead – Dan Snyder To Sell Commanders

The reign of terror… is finally coming to an end.

Dan Snyder and the Washington Commanders have reached an agreement in principle, to sell the franchise to Josh Harris and his group for $6 billion. The mark sets a new record for the most expensive sale in NFL history. It surpasses last year’s record of $4.65 billion set by the Walton-Penner group when they purchased the Denver Broncos.

Snyder bought the team in 1999 for $800 million.

Snyder and his wife, Tanya, a co-owner of the team, formally began a search for a buyer in November last year, when they hired Bank of America to seek offers for all or a portion of the Commanders.

Washington Commanders 2023 Free Agency: Additions And Subtractions

The Washington Commanders enter the 2023 offseason with several holes to fill. While the NFL Draft in April will fill some of those holes, Washington will look to free agency to bolster their roster. NFL free agency officially opened on March 15th, but the Commanders were making moves days before that in the legal tampering period.

This blog will be updated frequently to keep an on-going tally on the moves that Washington have made.

Heinicke And Wentz Make Way For Brissett In Commanders Quarterback Juggle

The Washington Commanders’ 2023 quarterback room will look very different than it did last year; regardless of wether or not second-year man Sam Howell gets the nod as the starter. After losing Taylor Heinicke and Carson Wentz in free agency, the Commanders got their veteran quarterback on Wednesday when they signed Jacoby Brissett.

Brissett will reportedly sign a one year deal worth up to $10 Million, that includes $8 million in guaranteed money.

The Commanders Get The Ball Rolling In Free Agency

The league year doesn’t begin until Wednesday, but the legal tampering period started today at noon. The Commanders made a few moves and might even have been considered busy. They signed a couple of offensive linemen, a linebacker and a cornerback – which were all positions of need.

The Commanders signed offensive lineman Nick Gates from division rival New York Giants, as well as offensive tackle Andrew Wylie from the Kansas City Chiefs.

They also signed linebacker Cody Barton and claimed cornerback Cameron Dantzler off waivers.

Commanders Bringing Up The Rear In Recent NFL Players Association Survey

The NFL Players Association just conducted a thorough league survey. They called them “NFL Player Team Report Cards.” In them, they graded teams in various categories like treatment of families, food service/nutrition, weight room, strength coaches, training room, training staff, locker room and even team travel.

The Washington Commanders finished dead last.

The report was released yesterday during the Scouting Combine, and was based on anonymous responses from approximately 1,300 players.

Daron Payne Gets Slapped With The Franchise Tag

The Washington Commanders became the first team in the National Football League to use the franchise tag this offseason. They placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on Daron Payne, which will hopefully keep him around for at least the 2023 season. The tag is worth a few Big Macs short of $19 million ($18.937), and will become fully guaranteed when he signs it.

The move comes just the day after the Commanders cleared almost $30 million from the cap books by releasing quarterback Carson Wentz and defensive back Bobby McCain. The team is projected to have approximately $35 million available, less the value of Payne’s tag.

Snyder Blocking Bezos From Bidding On The Commanders

Ever wondered what a spoiled billionaire kicking at the air like a young child would look like? Dan Snyder is doing it right now. Proverbially at least. Apparently Snyder is blocking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos from buying the Washington Commanders.

It is the adult rich-guy equivalent of, “I’m taking my football and going home.”

It’s petty with a capital “P”.

The Bank of America were hired by Snyder to help with the sale of the team, and they have told Bezos that he will not be allowed to submit a bid.

The reason for the block?

Jeff Bezos Hires Investment Firm To Aid With Bid For Commanders

This week, Jeff Bezos reportedly hired the investment firm of Allen & Company to help him place a bid on the Washington Commanders.  That is the same investment firm that helped the Walton-Penner group purchase the Denver Broncos last year, for $4.65 billion. They also helped David Tepper buy the Carolina Panthers in 2018.

The NFL would love for Bezos to be the one that buys Dan Snyder’s Commanders. He already has a significant connection with the league, with Amazon being the exclusive broadcaster for Thursday Night Football. Amazon made waves becoming the first streaming-only option in league history.
