Wallpaper Wednesday: Chris Thompson – Breakout Performer

It was heartbreaking to see Chris Thompson carted off the field this weekend. He has become such a valuable weapon for this struggling offense, and he has already overcome a multitude of significant sports injuries.

But when the dust settles from a ridiculously tough loss to the Saints, Redskins fans that seem to have a propensity for disagreeing – would all agree that losing Thompson, and in such a grandiose fashion, was probably the most bitter taste left in their mouth.

Thompson had an incredible 10 games for the Redskins in 2017 – so incredible in fact, that the opposition’s game plan had become to simply come in and shut down the elusive scat back. And while more teams were scheming for him, they were still having trouble shutting him down.

Thompson led the Redskins in BOTH rushing (64 carries, 294 yards) and receiving (39 receptions, 510 yards) – an incredible feat, and testament to how tough the running back has been to bring down after a catch.

His play defines the word “breakout” and was the inspiration for this week’s Wallpaper Wednesday.

Washington Redskins Face Crucial Period in Weeks Ahead

After eleven weeks of NFL football, what’s left to play for in the NFC East as one of the league’s most competitive conferences edges towards a conclusion – and what do the Washington Redskins have to do?

Currently third in the NFC East, the Redskins are 4-6, just behind the 5-5 Dallas Cowboys. With a margin so tight, a single weekend of NFL action could change the standings completely. The only problem is that the Philadelphia Eagles are running away with it, with a 9-1 record, and are standing amongst the contenders to go all the way to the Super Bowl. So the Redskins and the Cowboys are “battling” for second place, and on an outside chance, a Wild Card berth.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Joe Jacoby Vintage Edition

As I sat around trying to decide who I was going to make the subject of this week’s Wallpaper Wednesday, I found myself slightly uninspired. The only player that I thought earned the stripe on Sunday was DJ Swearinger, and he’s already been the subject of a Wallpaper Wednesday AND included in the Flight Marshalls wallpaper just last week.

So I dipped into the well and pulled out my favorite all-time Redskin – Mr. Joe Jacoby. Not only the greatest lineman to ever don the burgundy and gold – not only one of the greatest undrafted lineman to ever play – but the greatest offensive lineman not in the Hall of Fame. Disgraceful. And grounds for any Redskins fan to boycott Canton if they believe in the sanctity of the process.

He was on all three Redskins Super Bowl teams. He made four Pro Bowls. He was first team All Pro twice. The Pro Football Hall of Fame itself, even named him to the 2nd team all 1980s team. But still not in the Hall.

Redskins Take A Ride From the Penthouse to the Outhouse Against the Vikings

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The infamous old Charles Dickens quote describes the emotional roller coaster of the last two weeks for any supporter of the Washington Redskins. After overcoming all odds the week before against a tough Seattle Seahawks team, it looked more like Washington mailed in their performance against the Minnesota Vikings. The inconsistency has to be driving the bookmakers mad when trying to set the betting odds for the Redskins this week, and it isn’t doing much more for the morale of Redskins Nation.

Just two weeks ago, the average burgundy and gold supporter was swimming with delight after delivering one of the grittiest performances in recent Redskins memory. They fought hard. They performed perhaps above their ability level, and the coaches did a bang up job in getting a decimated team ready to play a surging, solid team in the Seahawks.

But apparently the wheels came off at some point between that game, and this weekend’s 38-30 loss against the Vikes. The Redskins looked like a totally different team.

Throwback Thursday: On This Day in Redskins History – 1958

On this day in Redskins history in 1958, Eddie LeBaron led the Washington Redskins to a 45-31 trouncing of the Chicago Cardinals.

LeBaron only completed 15 of his 23 passes for 267 yards, but an astounding 5 of those passes were for touchdowns. Not only that, 4 of them were in the first half, as Washington staked out an insurmountable 38-10 lead.

Redskins running back Johnny Olszewski also had a first half two yard touchdown rush, and finished the game with 136 yards on 19 carries. That’s more than 7 yards per carry.

The win came at Griffith Stadium with 26,169 in attendance.

Did The Redskins Turn A Corner With Their Victory over the Seahawks?

Last Sunday, fans were treated to one of the absolute best games of the 2017 NFL season, and one of the grittiest performances that a Washington Redskins team has put in for a long time. The Redskins overcame what seemed an insurmountable amount of injuries at key positions, as well as a late Seahawks touchdown that could have easily sucked the wind out of Washington’s sails, to come away with a hard-fought, all important 17-14 victory over the Seahawks. That type of perseverance is sure to muddle the betting odds for the Redskins games, but could also serve to springboard the Redskins to a solid back half of the season.

Even the most optimistic of the Redskins faithful came into the matchup scratching their heads. How on earth was a team that didn’t even have enough guys to field a full healthy roster, going to compete with a surging 5-2 team, that had really only one key injury?

Old fashioned blood and guts, that’s how.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Flight Marshalls – The Redskins Secondary

This week’s wallpaper Wednesday recognizes the group of guys holding down the Redskins’ secondary in 2017.

Until this past Sunday, that group consisted of Bashaud Breeland, Josh Norman, Montae Nicholson and DJ Swearinger; but following the return of the venerable DeAngelo Hall, it was impossible to leave him out. What a gritty performance from the 14 year veteran to come back from a torn ACL and not only start the game, not only finish the game, but actually be the one who made the very last – game saving – play by the Redskins defense. Kudos to Hall.

The Loser Papers – 2017 – Edition IV

Finally, we managed to beat Seattle in their stadium. It is so rare for the Redskins to win a game going away; they always have to make it interesting. It was nice to see the other team make the mistake of going for 2 too early in the game, but when Wilson found a wide-open receiver for a TD with 1:40 left on the clock, I thought this edition of TLP would never go to print. I need to know how this happened. Maybe The Seattle Times can shed some light on the subject:

SNAFU: Redskins Make Some Injury Decisions – DeAngelo Hall Activated

The Redskins released some injury and roster news today, as usual, most of it no good.

As of now, Shawn Lauvao (stinger), Matt Ioannidis (hand), and tight ends Jordan Reed (hamstring) and Niles Paul (concussion) are all officially out for the Seahawks matchup. None of those four are that surprising, but what was surprising was that after finally stirring a bit last week against Dallas, Jamison Crowder was downgraded to out with his hamstring injury.

With five guys on the active roster out, that means that only two of the players currently listed as doubtful, questionable or probable can sit. The rest will have to dress to have the full 47-man roster.

The Redskins Injury Situation Has Officially Reached A Sublime State

Do you ever remember an instance where an NFL team couldn’t field a roster? That is exactly the situation that the WRedskins currently find themselves in, coming off a tough loss to the Cowboys this past weekend. Obviously the state of the roster drastically affects the Washington Redskins betting odds this week, and Jay Gruden added a few more critical names to the Redskins unavailable list on Monday at his press conference.

Jordan Reed (hamstring) was the most “marquee” player added to the laundry list of injuries this week, along with fellow tight end Niles Paul who is under the NFL’s concussion protocol after a scary helmet-to-helmet collision against Dallas. Promising defensive lineman Matt Ioannidis will undergo surgery to his hand and definitely will not be available for this week’s matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

There are 53 players on an NFL roster – each week, the team is allowed to activate 47 of them. Right now, 13 of those 53 Redskins players are injured. The team is literally in danger of not being able to field a full football squad this week against Seattle. And that 13 doesn’t include Morgan Moses somehow, who is playing on two sprained knees.
