Tyler Owens isn’t a household name. Or at least he wasn’t until this past weekend. After his special teams play against the Eagles on Sunday, he’s certainly a lot more known now.
What a play. What a hit.
Owens carried on the aggressive play on Sunday that landed him on the roster in the first place. He was ferocious in the preseason. If anything, he upped it in game one.
Luckily for fans, Fox caught the ENTIRE play and effort on camera:
Quinn Comments On The Play
Head coach Dan Quinn spoke about the play in his press conference on Monday:
“He’s a guy who’s speed and strain is always there, but to see that one come together, it was just awesome. And it was so him, like, ‘Oh, thanks, man. That’s what I do.’ You know, like, it was like no big deal. And you’re like, ‘Man, this is a really big deal.’ It was a really cool play and I got to see it probably like everybody else did from the network feed afterwards. And it was one of my favorite plays in a long time on special teams for sure.”
High praise indeed.
It caught the eye of Kyle Brandt too:
Owens Comments
Owens himself said that he had been getting held on the previous punt, so winning Brandt’s “Angry Runs” award was indeed appropriate:
”This is fitting because I was actually angry,” Owens said.
Owens said he talked to the officials about getting held previously.
Brandt’s “Angry Runs” award is always for a run, but for Owens he made an exception.
The third-year pro was an undrafted free agent out of Texas Tech. He plays safety, but his tenacity is said to be getting him some looks at slot corner too. He was also already known for good work on special teams in the kicking game.
Now he’s become a viral sensation. Everybody is apparently searching up, “Tyler Owens hit,” or more generically, “Commanders #18 big hit.”
Keep up the good work young man.
Hail.
