The receiver hole is filled as the Washington Commanders sign Stefon Diggs. All the top NFL reporters are reporting that Diggs is “set to sign,” but it definitely seems to be a done deal.
“BREAKING: The Commanders are signing 4x Pro Bowl WR Stefon Diggs, multiple sources tell me,” Jordan Schultz reported.
Adam Schefter went as far as to say that it was a one-year contract worth up to $12 Million.
That’s a pretty darn good deal for a 4-time Pro Bowler. Even at 33 years old.
Why This Signing Matters For The Commanders
Many people felt that wide receiver was one of the Commanders biggest offseason needs for 2026. Many panicked when it didn’t get done in the opening free agency window.
Washington added wide receiver Antonio Williams in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Despite all camp reports for Williams being resoundingly positive to date, would that be enough? What if Terry McLaurin suffered a long time injury? Could Williams step up that much?
That’s what made landing a legitimate WR2 so vital in some people’s eyes.
Stefon Diggs in 2025
Diggs put up his seventh 1000-yard season last year while with the New England Patriots. He was the preferred target for Drake Maye in a very successful Patriots season. However, negotiations on a contract extension went sour, and New England set him free.
Despite his age, the 11-year veteran showed that he still has a lot left last year. In fact, given that he suffered an ACL injury in 2024, he may even be stronger with a healthy full season behind him.
Profile Of New Commander Diggs
The wide receiver was initially drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. He made an almost immediate impact playing with Adam Thielen.
He didn’t become a 1000-yard receiver until his fourth season in Minnesota, but posted very solid numbers in his first three seasons (720, 903 and 849 yards). In 2018, he posted his first of SIX straight seasons with 1000 yards. In fact, his injury in 2024 that limited him to 8 games was the only season that he hasn’t registered 1000 in the last eight seasons.
Minnesota traded him to the Buffalo Bills in 2020, where he put up 1535 yards and broke the franchise record for receiving yards in a season.
Washington should still have over $30 Million in cap space after the $12 Million subtraction. They sat at approximately $44 Million before the signing.
Local Flavor – Early Life For Diggs
Diggs was born in Gaithersburg, MD and played his college ball for the Maryland Terrapins. Injuries hampered his Sophomore and Junior seasons, but he earned second team All-Big Ten Conference honors in his final season there.
In high school, the receiver attended Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Montgomery County, Maryland. He logged 810 yards receiving with 23 touchdowns as a junior in 2010 – he was runner-up for the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year. As a senior, he recorded 770 yards receiving and 8 touchdowns, as well as 277 rushing yards and three more touchdowns on the ground. He even played defense, registering 31.5 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. The Washington Post named him a first team All-metro selection.
What The Diggs Signing Does For The Commanders
Diggs fills a significant hole. Not only does he provide insurance against a McLaurin injury, he takes pressure off rookie Antonio Williams and allows him to play in the slot. Jayden Daniels has to be tickled pink. Having two bonafide Pro Bowl receivers in your offense is a quarterback’s dream.
It will be really tough to blanket both of them. For any opposing team.
