Brandon Aiyuk’s 2026 offseason remains in limbo as the wide receiver continues looking for a move out of San Francisco. A move that seems highly unlikely to be to the Commanders now, after their signing of Stefon Diggs yesterday.
The former 49ers star has not played since tearing his ACL and MCL in Week 7 of the 2024 season. He missed all of 2025 after the injury. The 49ers voided roughly $27 million in 2026 guaranteed money because Aiyuk missed required rehab sessions and team meetings. They later placed him on the reserve/left squad list in December 2025 after he stopped reporting.
That designation keeps Aiyuk under contract through 2028. He must apply to the NFL for reinstatement before the team can release or trade him. As of early August 2026, he has not taken that step.
Aiyuk’s Public Push for Washington
Aiyuk has made his preference clear through social media. In late June he posted: “Tell them boys cut me today and I’ll sign with the Commanders tomorrow.”
He has worn Commanders gear, chanted “Go Commanders” and “Raise Hail,” and referenced his friendship with quarterback Jayden Daniels, a former Arizona State teammate. Reports also indicate he purchased a $10 million home in Loudoun County, Virginia, near the team’s facility.
Commanders general manager Adam Peters helped draft Aiyuk while with the 49ers. Earlier in the offseason, sources said Washington viewed Aiyuk as a potential low-risk addition opposite Terry McLaurin if released and confirmed healthy. The team was not interested in a trade and preferred a short-term, incentive-heavy deal.
49ers Hold Firm
49ers general manager John Lynch has repeated that Aiyuk is on the left-squad list and that the organization will focus on players present at training camp. Lynch previously stated it is safe to say Aiyuk has played his last snap in San Francisco. The team has found no trade partner.
“Brandon is on a left squad designation. As such, he’s not on our 90-man roster. And I’m personally, and we as an organization, are going to focus on the players that are here. And so, I don’t have anything to say on that, anything to add to that. We wish him well. We wish his family well.“
Aiyuk’s social-media activity, including comments directed at Daniels, has complicated any potential landing spots. The Commanders just signed free-agent receiver Diggs to a one-year deal, addressing depth needs behind McLaurin.
Meltdown Highlights
June 3 – The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office issued a warrant for his arrest on a misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speeding in reference to a video Aiyuk posted to YouTube in December on a road that runs past Levi’s Stadium.
June 25 – Aiyuk said in a video on his Instagram that he would “sign with the Commanders tomorrow if the 49ers cut him today”. He remains under contract with the 49ers while on the reserve/left squad list.
June 26 – Aiyuk said in a social media post that he will not return to California if there is indeed a warrant out for his arrest. Could he really have been unaware?
June 30 – The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala reports that Aiyuk’s recent social media posts could prove “concerning” for the Commanders front office: “What was once a seemingly minimal-risk option now appears more concerning.” Jhabvala added that the Commanders would, “have to feel incredibly confident that he’s fit, physically and emotionally, to not just sign, but be committed to what they’re trying to build.”
July 4 – Aiyuk criticizes Jayden Daniels and his relationship with his mother. “Boy, I’m a grown ass man. You’re gonna have to start running behind your momma and I might believe what you’re talking about, but until then, uh-uh.” The two former friends promptly unfollowed each other on Instagram.
July 26 – 49ers GM John Lynch states that Aiyuk “is on a left squad designation” as the team opens training camp. The designation means he does not count against the 49ers’ 90-man roster for camp.
What It Means
Any reunion is highly-unlikely-to-not happening now. His 2026 offseason saga continues with no clear resolution.
Washington’s receiving corps would seem complete now with Diggs, so the long-term outcome for Aiyuk remains unpredictable. Will anybody want him?
