The Commanders placed Jerome Ford On Injured Reserve on Tuesday. They also officially released Jake Moody and punter Matt Haack. Washington signed four new players to the roster as well.
Ford To IR
No official word yet on what the injury to Ford was. He had one carry in the preseason game against Miami this past weekend. Perhaps the biggest reason for the move was the play of the other running backs on the roster in that game. Both Robert Henry Jr. and Kaytron Allen put in good shifts against the Dolphins. It’s possible that just made Ford expendable.
Waxing poetic, it’s fun to remember back when Joe Gibbs used to “hide” players by putting guys on the IR that weren’t quite where they needed to be but that he didn’t want to lose. After all, practice squad players aren’t protected and can be signed by another team at any time.
It’s more likely that Ford is released with an injury settlement in the near future, but it’s fun to harken back to days past. Ford could still land with another team this season, but in Washington, he appears to have been on the outside looking in.
Kickers Released
Jake Moody
As was reported yesterday, place kicker Jake Moody has been officially released. Moody played college football for the Michigan Wolverines, where he won the 2021 Lou Groza Award. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft. He had two up-and-down seasons in San Francisco, and was released after missing two field goals in the first game of his third season.
The Chicago Bears picked him up and placed him on their practice squad. He was elevated to the main roster in week 7 due to an injury, but went back to the practice squad after two games. Washington picked him up for the final six games of the 2025 season, and he made his Commanders debut in Week 13 against the Broncos.
Matt Haack
Punter Matt Haack was also released. He was ostensibly signed to stand in for an injured Tress Way, who was out with a pec injury. Tress is an institution in Washington, and can likely play until he decides to pack it in.
Haack startd with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. He spent four seasons in Miami, playing in 64 of 64 games. His best season was in 2018 when he had 87 punts for 3,884 yards with 35 punts inside the 20.
He played a full season for the Buffalo Bills in 2021, and for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. He has since bounced around the league with Arizona (2x), Cleveland, Denver, another stint with Buffalo and with the New York Giants before landing in D.C. for a few weeks.
Other Roster Moves
Washington announced four roster additions on Tuesday as well – two on offense, two on defense. They signed linebacker Krys Barnes and defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II, as well as tight end Tre McKitty and running back Craig Reynolds.
Krys Barnes
Barnes was signed as a UDFA by the Green Bay Packers in 2020 and spent three seasons there. He started 23 games for the Pack before an injury in the first game of his third season took him out until late in the season. He then spent two seasons in Carolina and another in Carolina.
Maurice Hurst Jr
Hurst was drafted by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He had four sacks in his first season and a couple in his second season, as well as a couple of forced fumbles. He then spent two seasons with the 49ers, but couldn’t out battle injuries.
Then he signed with Cleveland and spent parts of three seasons there – appearing in 13 games in 2023. Despite re-signing with the Browns in December of 2025, he did not see any action. He spent his time on the practice squad.
Tre McKitty
Hurst was selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, after playing college ball in Georgia and Florida. He was released in 2023, and then spent time on the practice squads for the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans.
He also spent time with the UFL’s Louisville Kings.
Craig Reynolds
Reynolds actually started with Washington after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He was a late cut but was signed to the practice squad immediately. The running back was promoted to the Redskins active roster that October and saw time on special teams before being released in November.
He was immediately signed to the Atlanta Falcons practice squad, where he spent that season and the summer of 2020. After being released by the Falcons, he was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. He was on again, off again on that practice squad and got called up to the active roster for one game.
Reynolds signed with the Detroit Lions in 2021. He spent most of the time on the practice squad but was called up for two games, including one start – where he rushed for 112 yards on 23 carries. The RB spent 2022 and 2023 on the Lions roster and scored his first NFL touchdown.
He most recently spent some of 2025 on the New England Patriots practice squad.
Long Shots
All four of the new signees are in tough and won’t likely make the team. That’s not meant to be disrespectful as every one of these guys have showed great sticktuitiveness hanging around the league. They’re easy to dismiss as warm bodies for Camp, but no NFL player has taken an easy path.
Good luck to all of them.
