Commanders Sign Preston Smith: Veteran Pass Rusher Returns to Washington

In a move to address immediate defensive needs, the Commanders sign Preston Smith following the season-ending injury to starter Deatrich Wise Jr. The veteran pass rusher returns to Washington after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the franchise.

Smith Homecoming Bolsters Defense

Washington announced the move Wednesday, and placed cornerback Jonathan Jones on injured reserve to make room on the roster. This opened the door for Smith’s return to his original NFL home.

The 32-year-old edge rusher provides immediate depth for a depleted defensive line. Can he fill the void left by Deatrich Wise Jr.? Wise suffered a torn left quadriceps during last week’s loss to Green Bay, and is lost for the season.

It’s a cool story regardless. Especially when many fans didn’t want him to leave after his first stint. That isn’t to say that a lot of miles haven’t been traveled since that time.

Proven Production and Versatility

Smith is here to rush the passer. He recorded 24.5 sacks during his initial Washington stint from 2015-2018 before joining Green Bay via free agency. His 70.5 career sacks include 44 during his time with the Packers.

He had 4.5 sacks in 2024, split between his time in Green Bay (2.5) and Pittsburgh (2).

At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, Smith offers the versatility that defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. values. He can rush from virtually any position, and has played in both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses. That fits well with Washington’s defensive packages and philosophy. Smith gives the defense flexibility in their pass-rushing packages. He can also provide veteran leadership for younger players.

Washington had targeted defensive line depth during the offseason. With Wise now sidelined for the season, Smith’s return to Washington provides an experienced replacement.

Smith’s availability and Washington’s immediate need creates a perfect fit for both sides, giving the Commanders an established pass rusher ready to potentially contribute immediately.
