The Washington Commanders officially unveiled their new alternate uniforms for the 2025 NFL season today. They’re already making waves among fans. In a nostalgic nod to the franchise’s Super Bowl era, the new look pays homage to the team’s late ’80s and early ’90s success. Most of it accomplished with stripes!
Washington has had a pair of polarizing rebrands over the last few years. The first came when the Redskins moniker was done away with in favour of the temporary “Washington Football Team.” Then again in 2022 when they became the Commanders.
The changes in name came with new uniforms. While there were similarities to the classic burgundy and gold, they still felt very different.
On Wednesday, the Commanders unveiled new alternate uniforms. They look much more like the old guard. Fitting given that today is the franchise’s 93rd birthday.
“We are excited to celebrate Washington’s rich history with these iconic, Super Bowl Era uniforms this season,” Commanders team president Mark Clouse said.
“Ever since Josh Harris and our ownership group acquired the team back in 2023, they’ve placed great value in finding ways to connect the past and present and pay homage to those that made the Burgundy & Gold what it is today.”
Traditional Commanders New Alternate Uniforms
The alternate uniforms feature a clean white jersey paired with burgundy pants. Fans will immediately recognize the look from the days when Doug Williams led the franchise to a Super Bowl title in 1988. These uniforms echo the design worn before the team’s major rebrand in 2020. They offer a near replica of the classic style, minus the now-retired Redskins name and imagery.
The Commanders teased the release on social media leading up to the unveiling, generating excitement and anticipation from fans eager for a taste of history. This updated design seeks to bring back the vintage styling that resonated so deeply with longtime supporters.
Visual elements harken back to a championship era. All logos and names associated with the Redskins brand remain excluded. The focus here is on celebrating a winning legacy without reviving outdated branding.
Commanders New Alternate Uniforms To Be Worn Three Times
These uniforms will be worn in Week 9 vs. the Seattle Seahawks, Week 13 vs. the Denver Broncos and Week 17 against dem Dallas Cowboys.
