President Trump offers Commanders help in stadium negotiation? Really? The President was obviously the former USFL New Jersey Generals owner at one time and does have some football experience. According to the Washington Times, he would like to assist the Washington Commanders with their new stadium deal.
The team seeks to build a new home at the RFK Stadium site in the District. While the franchise reached an agreement with Mayor Muriel Bowser, they still await D.C. Council approval.
“If I can help them out, I will,” Trump offered. “The federal government ultimately controls [the property]. I saw the plans, I saw the stadium. … It will be a great place for the NFL to be there, so if they want to negotiate a little tough, that’s okay with me.”
Public hearings on the stadium deal are scheduled for late July.
Name Criticism?
Washington operated as the “Redskins” until 2020, when former owner Dan Snyder changed the name, and then changed it again. The new name initially drew ridicule but has gradually gained more fan acceptance since Snyder sold the team to Josh Harris in 2023.
The Commanders experienced a remarkable resurgence last season. This marked their first year under general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn. Additionally, rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels led the franchise to its first NFC championship game appearance in over 30 years.
Recent polls seem to reflect more positive sentiments toward the name change.
“Winning can make everything sound good,” the president stated. “If they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sound good. But I wouldn’t have changed the name.”
“It doesn’t have the same ring to me.”
Commanders’ representatives want to open the stadium by 2030. This timeline would allow them to compete for major events like the Super Bowl, the 2031 Women’s World Cup and Wrestlemania.
