Truthfully, it’s just always a good day to look back and remember – and commemorate – Slingin’ Sammy Baugh. The 1952 season was his last in the NFL, after spending 16 glorious seasons with the franchise.
On what was the opening day in 1952, Baugh didn’t actually have to do all that much against the Cardinals, except cap off drives. He threw two touchdown passes to Harry Dowda (2 yards) and Hugh Taylor (10 yards). he only threw the ball 15 times but connected on 11 of them. He had a 99.2 quarterback rating.
Washington didn’t need to pass, because coach Curly Lambeau had the run game driving on all cylinders. They pounded out 196 yards on a workmanlike 59 carries. An unheard of seven different players rushed the ball that day.
Harry Gilmer led the way for all rushers with 87 yards on 19 carries. Chuck Drazenovich chipped in 35 yards on 7 carries and also caught a ball for 20 more yards. Julie Rykovich had 28 yards on 12 carries and Sam Venuto had 16 yards on 4 carries. Dowda had 7 yards on 5 carries, as well as his touchdown catch.
Cardinals quarterback Frank Tribucka was rendered virtually useless by the Washington defense, managing just 33 yards of passing offense on a 4-for-11 day.
Charley Trippi stepped in to try and right the ship, but threw a pick to Washington DB Johnny Williams on his only attempt.
They fared a little better on the ground with 66 yards rushing that was split between Ollie Matson (36) and Emil Sitko (30). Sitko had the lone touchdown for Chicago on an 8-yard scamper.
The Cardinals managed a dismal 104 yards of total offense and just 7 first downs.
