Hognostications: Week 7

Well at least we’re not Cardinal fans. However, as with the Card fans, this past week thoroughly tested the resolve of those of us that bleed burgundy and gold. As painful as an untimely loss to a 0-5 team at home is, it can’t compare to the five seasons endured with Norv Turner at the helm or the loss to the pukes the Christmas before last.

Pittsburgh at Atlanta
Because the Falcons can’t even beat the Gnats in their own house.
Pick – Steelers

New England at Buffalo
Because the Bills lost to the Lions, nuff said.
Pick – Patriots

Carolina at Cincinnati
Tough pick, but Cincy can’t afford to drop a third straight game.
Pick – Bengals

Jacksonville at Houston
No brainer.
Pick – Jaguars

San Diego at Kansas City
The Chargers will continue to roll.
Pick – Chargers

Green Bay at Miami
At least the Dolphins could beat the Titans. Collins vs. Culpepper.
Pick – Packers

Detroit at New York Jets
Because they’re at home.
Pick – Jets

Philadelphia at Tampa Bay
Philthy will be focused after losing last week to the Saints.
Pick – Eagles

Denver at Cleveland
The Brownies have only beaten the Faiders this season.
Pick – Broncos

Washington at Indianapolis
Hell freezes over and Hogs fly!
Pick – Redskins

Arizona at Oakland
What a game Monday night. Leinart played unbelievably well and didn’t look like a rookie against a stout defense. A loss to the Faiders and Green’s history.
Pick – Cardinals

Minnesota at Seattle
The Seahawks are too tough at home.
Pick – Seahawks

New York Giants at Dallas
T.O. and the Pukes on Monday, oh boy. As if another reason was needed to hate the Pukes.
Picks – Cowboys

Bye Week: Bears, Titans, Rams, Saints, 49ers, Ravens

Last Week’s Results: 6-6
Season to Date: 51-35

Hognostications Counterpoint NFL Week 7

Think about it for a second: EIGHT games were decided by a field goal score or less this past week!

Can you imagine the revolution in the weekly standings if only a few of these had turned out to have a different outcome in a play or two? Incredible!

This was the week of the desperate underdog. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions and a certain team in Tennessee pulled upsets unexpected by most Hognosticators. Thank God for the Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders for providing some measure of stability at the top and bottom of our expectations even if that is done at the expense of sleepless nights for their head coaches L. Smith, D. Green and A. Shell.

This was a very difficult NFL Week to Hognosticate according to the results as well. Let me give you some measures of it:

a) The overall score average of the group was the lowest this season so far.

b) The spread between the best score at 11 – 2 and the worst 4 – 9 is the widest among Hognosticators in a long while.

c) Only one poster won and -only- another followed in second place.

d) The scores of the infamous Vegas bookies, the ESPN “experts” and the Sleazy one are typical or lower than those obtained by many in our group.

We have a tie in first place in the season standings between CLL and JPM36! CLL was one of the unexpected victims this week, adding insult to injury after an awful Redskins game. There were also many significant changes in the middle of the season standings table. Some posters have kept on climbing steadily and others are descending week after week. This may still change a lot of course, and that is why we have always said that this is a marathon and not a 100 m dash sprint.

The bad news are that this NFL Week 7 might be only slightly easier than the last one. Several games are way too close to call by most experts and the Vegas bookies. Considering our recent performances as Hognosticators and the Redskins play, let me finish by quoting the funniest and most opportune post in my history as a poster in this board:

“I just want to say that I think everyone on this board is super smart, and that we’re all in this thing together. It’s not one poster, it’s all of us, and it starts with me. We all have to be better posters. This board has a lot of character, and a heck of a lot of talent, and we just have to work through this thing together. We have a great core group of posters, and we’ll get through this inconsistency together. Thank you.”
