The 2023 offseason for the Washington Commanders saw some turnover in the coaching ranks. The most noteworthy of course, being the firing of Scott Turner at the end of the 2022 season.
Turner’s departure opened the door for Washington to hire Eric Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator. He helped guide Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and their high octane offense, to two Super Bowls. He was also named Assistant Head Coach.
After a disappointing 2022 season, the Washington Commanders fired offensive coordinator Scott Turner on Tuesday. He had been in Washington for three years, and had just signed a three year extension last offseason.
Turner had been with Ron Rivera for the last seven years. He came over from the Carolina Panthers with Ron after four years with that organization. Washington was his leap forward, as it was the first time that he had been given the reigns as an offensive co-ordinator.
But it’s tough to justify holding on to a coordinator whose unit consistently ranks in the bottom third of the league. The Commanders were just 20th in total yards and 26th in points this season.
The 2022 Taylor Heinicke experiment appears to have come to a close. Head coach Ron Rivera announced this week that Carson Wentz would get the start against the Cleveland Browns this Sunday. The winning streak is over. Washington blew a fourth quarter 10-point lead on Sunday, and fell to the Minnesota Vikings 20-17 in a heartbreaker. Minnesota’s Greg Joseph kicked a go-ahead 28-yard field goal with just 12 seconds left to go. The win put Minnesota at 7-1 for the season, while the Commanders fell to 4-5. … Read more
