Flashback Friday: Trevor Matich

Today’s Flashback Friday is Trevor Matich. After all, today is his birthday. 🙂

Matich played for the Redskins from 1994 through 1996, but was in Washington after his playing days, cutting his broadcasting teeth in D.C.

Perhaps the most memorable quote by Matich in his time here, was on (then) Head Coach Steve Spurrier:

“The Redskins would be better off if their head coach were a ham sandwich. A ham sandwich has no personal agenda and would at least do no harm.”

Umm, perfect.

Sonny Jurgensen: Throwback Thursday

In light of the Redskins’ match-up against their division rival Eagles this week, it seemed like a good time to feature Redskins mainstay Sonny Jurgensen.

Jurgensen was drafted by Philadelphia, and played seven seasons there; before being traded to Washington for quarterback Norm Snead and cornerback Claude Crabbe. He played eleven seasons for the Redskins, and incredibly won the NFL passing title in his final 1974 season at the age of forty. He was induced into the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Andre Carter Oil Painting

When Andre Carter played for the Redskins, he was kind enough to write a blog for us every week. He has always been especially near and dear to us. Obviously with social networks, it’s easier to stay in touch with players past and present these days, and I stll follow Dre on Twitter and am friends with him on Facebook.

If you aren’t already aware, after leaving the Redskins following the 2010 season, Carter played with the New England Patriots in 2011, the Oakland Raiders in 2012 and then again with the Pats in 2013 before retiring.

He recently returned to University of California, Berkeley both as an undergraduate assistant, and to finish the studies he started there. He was a Golden Bear from 1997 to 2000 where he was a unanimous All-American and finalist for the Bronco Nagurski Award.

But I digress…

At the end of last week, an incredible post popped up in my FB timeline – an oil painting commissioned by Andre’s wife Bethany to commemorate his NFL career. With permission of both Andre, and the artist Absolon, I’m blogging it so that the rest of Redskins Nation can see and appreciate this beautiful piece of work.
