Bears Squeak by Syracuse To End Skid 02.16.09

Avoiding their first five game losing streak in their most recent affiliation with the Washington Capitals, the Hershey Bears emerged from the Onondaga County War Memorial at Oncenter with a narrow 3-2 road victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Monday night.

The Crunch, coming off a 2-1 home shootout win over the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, took early advantage of the the Bears, who were still trying to find their legs after enduring the four hour game day bus trip from Hershey, getting a goal from former Norfolk Admiral, Michael Blunden, 13 seconds into the game.

Attempting to gain some momentum for his club, Hershey heavyweight, Kip Brennan, challenged Syracuse enforcer, Jon “Nasty” Mirasty, to drop the gloves shortly after the Blunden goal. Brennan, after getting off to a quick start in the tussle, felt the full brunt of three stiff right hands, with the last punch dropping Brennan to the ice, signaling a decisive win for Mirasty.

Caps Recap 2/16/09

It’s not easy to outshine a player such as Alex Ovechkin; but for this past weekend, Mike Green managed to do just that. Even though Green’s scoring run ended with eight games, he set a new league record for consecutive games with a goal scored by a defenseman. His eight game goal scoring streak was the longest such consecutive streak since the ’98-’99 season when Miroslav Satan and Teemu Selanne both had eight game runs.

Ovechkin may be knocking off records held by previous Caps left and right, but Green’s achievement is one that even the Great-Eight doesn’t have yet. Green’s eight game goal scoring streak is the longest by a Capital since ’86-’87 when Mike Gartner went on a nine-game goal-scoring run.

Senators Rule Bears 2.13.09

During Hershey’s march to the Calder Cup Finals during the 2006-07 season, a frustrated Binghamton Senators goaltender, Jeff Glass, skated the length of the ice attempting to take out his anger on Bears’ net minder, Maxime Daigneault, but absorbed the brunt of the blows. On Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena, Glass turned the tables on the Bears when he frustrated them, stopping 30 shots to send them to their third straight loss, 5-1.
