Commanders vs Lions Week 10: Washington Overwhelmed in 44-22 Loss

The Commanders vs Lions Week 10 matchup was a difficult night for Washington fans. The Commanders fell 44-22 to the Detroit Lions, suffering their fifth consecutive loss after a promising 3-2 start to the season.

Lions Too Much From the Start

Detroit arrived as one of the NFL’s most dangerous offenses, and they lived up to the billing. The Lions averaged eight yards per play and scored on eight of nine possessions. Furthermore, they converted both of their fourth-down attempts and controlled the clock with a 32:36 to 27:24 time of possession advantage. Washington, simply, had no answer.

Gibbs Runs Wild

Jahmyr Gibbs was the story of the night for Detroit. He weaved through Washington defenders all evening, finishing with 172 total yards and three touchdowns. His 44-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter — breaking loose down the right sideline — was the exclamation point on a dominant performance. Additionally, Jameson Williams added six receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown to make Washington’s defense look vulnerable all night.

Mariota and the Offense Show Flashes

Washington’s offense was not without its moments. Marcus Mariota led the unit with 213 yards and showed some explosiveness at times. A 41-yard connection with Jaylin Lane sparked a late first-half drive. Treylon Burks added a 37-yard catch in the third quarter. Chris Rodriguez punched in a one-yard touchdown, and Deebo Samuel caught a fourth-down score to keep things somewhat respectable at halftime.

However, Washington simply couldn’t match Detroit’s relentless pace. The Commanders trailed 25-10 at the break and never seriously threatened after that.

Payne Ejected, Injuries Pile Up

It was also a costly night off the ball for Washington. Defensive tackle Daron Payne was ejected after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the first half. Moreover, four players left the game with injuries — cornerback Trey Amos (ankle), linebacker Ale Kaho (concussion), Jonathan Jones (groin) and running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. (shoulder). The mounting injury toll, consequently, continues to be a major concern for the Commanders.

Detroit’s Methodical Dominance

The Lions didn’t need big plays to win. Instead, they ground Washington down with relentless efficiency. Jared Goff finished with 320 yards, spreading the ball effectively to Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Kalif Raymond. By the time Gibbs broke free for his third score early in the fourth quarter, the game was well beyond reach at 41-16.

What’s Next

Washington now heads overseas for a unique challenge. The Commanders face the Miami Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, on November 16 at 9:30 a.m. ET. After that international matchup, the team enters their bye week — a much-needed opportunity to rest, heal and reset.

Final Thoughts

The Commanders vs Lions Week 10 game exposed Washington’s limitations against elite competition. Injuries, penalties and an inability to slow Detroit’s offense proved too much to overcome.

Hopefully the bye week offers a chance to regroup and rediscover the team that looked more promising through the first five weeks of the season.
