Late last night, the Washington Commanders made a strategic move aims to strengthen their pass rush capabilities. Von Miller signs with the Washington Commanders and immediately the 36-year-old edge rusher fills a void.
Miller announced the signing on Instagram Wednesday night, posting two pictures of himself in a Washington jersey, with “DC… What’s good?” on social media.
Miller’s Impressive Career Resume
Miller brings substantial experience to Washington’s defense. He has recorded 129.5 career sacks, ranking 16th on the all-time list. First overall in active players.
During his three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, Miller recorded 14 total sacks. He notched eight sacks in his first season and six in his final year.
Washington hopes Miller can replicate his 2021 performance with the Los Angeles Rams. He was acquired in a midseason trade, and then delivered five sacks in eight regular-season games, and added four more sacks in the playoffs. The Rams won the Super Bowl.
The veteran pass rusher must still pass his physical before finalizing the one-year deal.
Miller spent his first 10 NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos. He accumulated 110.5 sacks during that dominant stretch, and earned seven All-Pro selections, including three first-team honors.
Miller also made eight Pro Bowl appearances, with his last coming after the 2019 season. He was named MVP of Super Bowl 50. His consistent excellence established him as one of the league’s premier pass rushers.
Connection to Commanders Management
Washington general manager Adam Peters has a history with Miller. Peters worked for Denver when the Broncos selected Miller in the first round of the 2011 draft. Peters left the organization after the 2016 season to join the San Francisco 49ers.

Addressing Pass Rush Deficiencies

Miller’s Recent Challenges
Miller’s Buffalo tenure included significant issues. He signed a six-year, $120 million contract in the 2022 offseason. After a strong start with eight sacks in 11 games, he suffered a major right ACL injury on November 24, 2022.
He appeared in 12 games during the 2023 season but recorded zero sacks and three tackles. Miller said he, probably should not have played due to the injury.
The 2024 season brought more turmoil. Miller served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The suspension stemmed from allegations involving an incident with his pregnant girlfriend in suburban Dallas during the Bills’ 2023 bye week. The case was later closed without charges being filed. The NFL conducted a separate investigation before issuing the suspension.
