The Ole Ball Coach Steve Spurrier wandered into Tennessee looking to get his team back on track, after losing to the San Francisco 49ers the week before. He got a solid performance from his defense and rookie quarterback Patrick Ramsey, and was able to ride it to victory.

Ramsey finished a respectable 20 of 34 for 268 yards, and was sacked only once. He threw touchdown passes to Rod Gardner (20 yards) and Kevin Lockett (23 yards). The first round pick from Tulane had a quarterback rating of 103.6.

Spurrier also reached into a bag of tricks in the fourth quarter and had Lockett throw the ball – to a wide open Stephen Davis for a 14-yard touchdown.

Davis also added a rushing touchdown, and smashed out 90 yards on 18 carries. Backup running back Kenny Watson provided a great 1-2 punch on the day, posting another 62 yards on 8 carries.

Lockett had a great day, catching a 23-yard touchdown pass to go along with him throwing one. he also had 58 yards receiving on 4 receptions.

Gardner led all receivers with 81 yards on 5 catches.

Washington’s offense looked like it was supposed to when they hired Spurrier, netting an impressive 442 yards and converting 8 of 15 third downs. They also held the ball for almost 10 minutes more than Tennessee did (34:12 vs 25:48).

The Redskins defense had as much to do with the win as the offense did.

They picked off Steve McNair three different times, with Fred Smoot grabbing two and Champ Bailey the other. They also sacked McNair four times (Daryl Gardener, Bruce Smith, Jesse Armstead, and LaDairis Jackson).

Perhaps more importantly, and equally as impressively, they held the always tough Eddie George to just 26 yards on 10 carries. The Titans could only muster 59 yards total on the ground.

It was a great come from behind victory for Washington, who were down 14-10 at the half.

They moved to 2-2 on the season and things were looking up for the Ole Ball Coach.

Fred Smoot and the Redskins defense stymied Eddie George all day. Smoot also had two interceptions.
