Today’s wallpaper subject is Charles Leno Jr. With the Washington Commanders season coming to a close last week with their win over the Dallas Cowboys, the only thing left in 2022, are the personal accolades for players. Starting left tackle Leno, is Washington’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
And he couldn’t possibly be more deserving.
WPMOTY
According to the NFL website, the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award “recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field.”
Every team nominates one player who they feel has made a significant positive impact in his community.
The award started in 1970, and had it’s name changed in 1999 to honor Walter Payton – who was himself a passionate contributor to his community.
All 32 teams select their own Man of the Year, and each one of them become eligible to win the national award. The national winner receives a $250,000 donation to their choice of charity, while the other 31 nominees receive up to $40,000 for their charities. All donations are made courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide.
The winner will be announced during the week of Super Bowl LVII.
A Very Worthy Recipient
In 2020, Leno and his wife Jennifer founded Beyond the Entertainer. The foundation focuses on mentoring, empowering, and inspiring community members of all ages to pay it forward.
The Foundation strives to achieve two main goals. The first is to show kids looking to start a career in sports, all of the positions and paths they could take beyond actually being a professional athlete. The second is to show people that athletes can do more than provide entertainment on game day.
Leno and his wife also created Leno Claus – their own version of a Christmas Countdown. For the first 20 days of December, the Beyond the Entertainer foundation works with 20 different nonprofits throughout the DMV community. They donate holiday gifts, stock stores, and give monetary donations to help the organizations.
The Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation
He also always has time to help with other events hosted by The Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation.
On Thanksgiving, Charles and Jennifer delivered meals to seniors in need, and volunteered their time to deep fry and give out turkeys for Medium Rare DC.
The Beyond the Entertainer foundation donated $5,000 to Feed the Fridge.
In October, Charles and Jennifer met with 30 local cancer survivors who were honored as part of the team’s THINK PINK® initiative. They took pictures with them, and gave them swag bags at the team’s 14th annual All-Star Survivors Celebration at Firefly Cellars.
As if that wasn’t enough, Charles also visits schools like Rose Hill Elementary School in Washington, D.C, to read to first graders and speak about the importance of reading and education.
What a gem.
He is more than worthy of a wallpaper, he deserves to be the national Man of the Year recipient.
