It’s a sad day for Washington fans, as one of the greatest defensive players in team history has passed away. Defensive tackle Dave Butz died on Friday.
He was 72 years old.
A man whose size was surpassed only by his heart, the 6’8″ Redskins alumnus often appeared to be a man amongst boys. He was with the Redskins from 1975 to 1988. When he retired from the game, he was the oldest player in the NFL at 38.
Many players and fans expressed their adoration and love for Butz on social media – including former teammate Joe Theismann:
“Lost a dear friend today. Dave Butz. Dave Mark Mosley and I used to ride to games together. A true gentle giant. Rest In Peace my friend.”
The organization also posted their condolences:
“We’re heartbroken over the loss of Washington Legend Dave Butz… a 2x Super Bowl champion and member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list. Sending our deepest condolences to Dave’s family and friends.”
Career
Butz played college football for Purdue and was a finalist for the Lombardi Award in 1972.
He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 5th overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft, but was picked up by Washington after two years.
Butz won two Super Bowls with the Redskins. He has the third most sacks (59.5) in Washington franchise history and was named one of the organization’s 70 greatest players.

Butz missed just four games in his 16-year NFL career.
In 1987, Dave checked himself out of a hospital so that he could play against the New York Jets. He was sick and had lost as much as 25-30 pounds.
He made a game-saving tackle late in the game, and won a game ball. Then he went back to the hospital.
True warrior spirit.
He was one of a kind.
