On this day in Washington history – September 30th, 1990 – Washington pounded the Phoenix Cardinals 38-10.
Gary Clark caught not one, but TWO 42 yard touchdown passes from quarterback Stan Humphries.
Clark was the favourite target all day – catching 8 balls for 162 yards. Humphries had a solid outing going 20 of 25 for 257 yards, with the two touchdown passes to Clark.
Clark would earn his second (of four) Pro Bowl nods at the end of the 1990 season. He finished the year with 75 catches for 1117 yards and 8 touchdowns.
Bittersweet Pill
It was as bittersweet as a win could be. Although Washington had won, they had done so at the expense of one of their own. Joe Bugel had just left the Redskins the previous offseason to take the head coaching job in Phoenix.
The architect of The Hogs – the Boss Hog – Bugel was head coach in Phoenix for four years. His record was 20-44.
More Information:
We lost Joe Bugel in 2020. He was dearly loved and is thought about often in the Washington community. May he rest in peace.
