On this day in Washington history – October 14th, 2012 – Robert Griffin III had arguably his most electric, and memorable run for Washington.
Who doesn’t remember when RGIII took a quarterback draw 76-yards down the sidelines for a touchdown, to seal a 38-26 victory over the Minnesota Vikings?
It was the longest touchdown run by a quarterback in franchise history. It was the longest touchdown run by a quarterback of any franchise for almost 20 years (1996).
Griffin had just returned from a concussion, and had played well the whole game.
He finished with 138 yards rushing – also a franchise record for quarterbacks.
It was RGIII’s second rushing touchdown of the second half. He had a 7-yard touchdown halfway through the third quarter as well.
He also connected with fullback Darrel Young in the first half on a 6-yard score.
RGIII’s late run obviously put the game out of reach for Minnesota, and brought the 78,000-plus in attendance at Fed Ex to their feet. It was one of Griffin’s finest moments in burgundy and gold.
Ended The Streak
The win broke an ugly losing streak of eight straight home games. Washington had not won at Fed Ex Field since September 18, 2011 – more than a year previous.

RGIII is now 31 years old. The former Heisman Trophy winner served as the Baltimore Ravens backup quarterback in 2020, but stepped away from playing in 2021 to take a job with ESPN.
He has not yet officially retired from the NFL.
