The phrase, “it was over by half-time” gets over-used a lot. However, the phrase was never more appropriate than in the Washington Football Team’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Washington were getting crushed 42-7 by half time, en route to a 56-14 drubbing on Prime Time television.
The loss moved Washington to 6-8 and out of the playoff running. That’s appropriate given their level of play the last few weeks.
It also guarantees that Washington will finish with a record below .500 for the fifth consecutive season. That’s 14 losing seasons in 23, under owner Daniel Snyder.
The most fight Washington put up, was on their own sidelines, with their own players. Teammates Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne got into a sideline dust-up, in which Allen punched Payne after being poked.
It wasn’t a good look for the team in front of a nation-wide audience.
Dominated Throughly
The Cowboys dominated every phase of the game. They scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. That hasn’t happened for them since 2012 (versus the Eagles).
Quarterback Dak Prescott only had to play three quarters, before getting the rest of the night off. He still managed to become the first quarterback in NFL history to throw a touchdown to a running back, a wide receiver, a tight end and an offensive lineman in the same game.
He finished with 330 passing yards and four touchdown passes.
Historically Bad
Sunday Night’s embarrassment was the biggest loss ever in the history of the rivalry. Despite Dallas being NFC East champions before the game started, Washington fans expected a closer affair between the two division rivals.
Not only have the Cowboys won both games in 2021, but eleven of the last fifteen. Dallas now owns a 75-47-2 overall lead in the match-up.
