Commanders Will Start Josh Johnson Versus The Cowboys

The Washington Commanders will start Josh Johnson at quarterback this weekend. Facing the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Day will be Johnson’s special Christmas present this year. Marcus Mariota is out with a quad injury, paving the way for a great yuletide story.

Johnson has just 10 career starts in his lengthy career. It marks his first start since Week 9 of the 2021 season with the Baltimore Ravens. Johnson earned his only win as a starter with Washington back in 2018.

Washington signed veteran Jeff Driskel off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. Driskel will serve as the No. 2 quarterback. Sam Hartman earns a promotion from the practice squad as the emergency third quarterback.

Left tackle Laremy Tunsil will miss the game with an oblique injury. Johnson loses one of his key pass protectors.

Johnson Brings Experience and Versatility

Coach Dan Quinn praised Johnson’s versatility and experience. The 39-year-old quarterback has played for FOURTEEN franchises in his impressive NFL career. He also spent time in the XFL, UFL, and AAF. He personifies the term “journeyman”.

The quarterback relieved Mariota in the third quarter of Saturday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He completed 5 of 9 passes for 43 yards and threw one interception.

Commanders will start Johnson as they close the season. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury likes Johnson’s calm mindset and accuracy. Kingsbury said Johnson’s journey across many teams makes him a quick study.

Johnson views his unique career with gratitude. He aims to be a positive light for the team this week.
