98 Days Left Until The Washington Commanders Opening Game of 2023

We continue with the not-really-all-that-official-countdown to the 2023 Washington Commanders regular season. There are exactly 98 days left until the Commanders first game of 2023 against the Arizona Cardinals on September 10th.

Here are some notable things about Washington that contain 98 in some way.

98 Jerseys

Phidarian Mathis currently wears the number 98 for the Commanders – even if he only got to wear it for one game last year. Brian Orakpo is likely the person many fans think of first when they think of jersey number 98.

Here is a list of the other guys that have worn the 98 jersey:

Abdullah Anderson: 2022-2022
Jessie Armstead: 2002-2003
Tony Barker: 1992-1992
Matthew Ioannidis: 2016-2022
Rob Jackson: 2008-2008
Terrance Knighton: 2015-2015
Lemar Marshall: 2004-2006
Steve Martin: 1987-1987
Phidarian Mathis: 2022-2023
Brian Orakpo: 2009-2014
Twan Russell: 1997-1999
Tony Woods: 1994-1996

Other 98 Stuff

The Miami Dolphins’ Fulton Walker took a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against the Washinton Redskins in Super Bowl XVII. That made the score 17-10 for Miami and was a precursor to the Riggo Run that ultimately won Washington it’s first Super Bowl.

’98 Season

The 98 season was not all that remarkable. Washington finished at 6-10, and 4th in the NFC East.

The coach was Norv Turner, and the General Manager was Charley Casserly.

The team was technically owned by the executors of Jack Kent Cooke‘s estate that year – John Kent Cooke, Ralph Kent Cooke, Stuart Haney, James Lacher, Vincent Salazar, Howard Sodoway, and Wanda Wiser.

Members of that squad included QB Trent Green, RBs Terry Allen and Stephen Davis,WRs Leslie Shepherd and Michael Westbrook, G Tre Johnson, C Cory Raymer, T Shah Pourdanesh, DE Kenard Lang, DT Dan Wilkinson, LBs Ken Harvey, Marvcus Patton and Derek Smith, and CBs Cris Dishman and Darrell Green.

Of interest – the quarterbacks coach was Mike Martz who would be leading the Rams to the Super Bowl just a couple of years later.
