Vanderjagt or Novak

Talk about the Washington Football Team here. Do you bleed burgundy and gold?

I would like the Redskins kicker to be:

Nick Novak
6
10%
Mike Vanderjagt
30
49%
Mark Moseley
25
41%

If you can sign Vanderjagt to a reasonable contract then I think you have to take a chance on him. Novak, while a local favorite because of his ties to Maryland, has been largely innefective this season on both field goals and kickoffs. To be perfectly honest, converting only 50% of your field goals (only 1 for 3 from 30-39) is pretty pathetic. In fact, Novak is tied with Suisham for the lowest percentage of made kicks in the NFL (and Suisham has only attempted 2 kicks). So based on the stats you can't really be doing any worse than Novak. His kickoffs aren't really any good either. I don't care who they bring in, be it Vanderjagt or someone else, but a chance needs to be made.

unfortuanately there is no question. Novak has the talent to achieve in this league but he cant botch 36 yard field goals and expect to succeed in this league. He botches the 36 yarder then comes back to drill a 40+ yarder. Other positions on the field allow you to "mess up" once in a while because you have so many plays to reprove yourself. But kicking is not one of them. You cant go an entire season making 50% or many times even 65%. Kicking is tough no doubt about it, but its a position that calls for perfection. Im rooting for Nick all the way, but at this point I would rather have Vandy hands down

vanderjagt is an idiot and plus he doesn't like to kick off. with his injury from preseason, he's about as sure as novak. thats why the buttboys got rid of him

I went with Mark Moseley his kick-offs would probably outdistance Novak and Vanderjerk

Kickers are expected to be worked out at Redskins Park this week likely on Tuesday.. Mike Vanderjagt was released by Dallas, and as of me writing this, there was no word whether he would be part of the session.. Gibbs said there have been no discussions of the team actually replacing Nick Novak who’s kickoffs remain short and his field goal percentage since returning is 50% however when asked if kickers were coming in to work out, Gibbs wouldn’t deny it, but also wouldn’t confirm it..

Definitely Vanderjagt.

If not for Troy Vincent, Nick Novak wouldn't be our kicker right now. The guy has made 2 great kicks and I will always be grateful for that, but he is not a good kicker.

i hate to say it because i don't like vanderjagt, but i can't see any way he isn't a better option right now- despite his recent struggles. he is 13 of 18, 72% on the season. novak is 5 of 10, 50%! that is just abysmal. i have actually been thinking lately that with novak, we should probably just go for it on 4th down almost every time, because there is probably realistically a much higher chance of converting than there is of him making the FG.

What about the guy we had in preseason Tyler Jones. He did really well in NFL Europe this past season. His kickoffs are pretty good also. I know he had a few over or close to 50 yards.

As soon as the Cowboys released him I was like LETS SIGN HIM UP!!

He was having a bad year true but this guy is the real deal. It happens.

The only thing is, Akers played like Novak when we had him and never gave him the chance to live up to his potential. Now he is one of the best in the game. I HATE the Eagles, but you have to give the guy credit he has heart. Remember last year when he was hurt? He still gave it all he had.

So maybe it would backfire on us again, but right now I would go with Vanderjagt. That is untill he says that JC has no heart.

he can't be asking for much money at this point... and i don't even have anything good to say about the guy, except that statisticly he's the greates kicker in the history of the game... so what do we have to lose... come next season it's going to be an open competition anyway... that being said, I think Danny would love to do it, but I don't know if Joe is up for dealing with any more than he has to right now...

An injured Vanderjagt is about as useful as an injured Hall. Novak is "better" than both. If the Redskins don't make any more kicker moves this season, at least we'll be able to approach it next year with little to no baggage.

Or, we can take joebagadonuts' strategy. :)

We took Dallas' trash before - I'm not interested in doing it again. I'd much rather continue (at least for the rest of this season) with an inconsistent Novak, than with that cocky s o b (and also inconsistent) Vandy. And why can't we get a kicker who can kick into the endzone???

No he isn't. Statistically Novak is the worst kicker in the NFL right now.

Well, I would still argue that he is better. Hall is obviously worse because of his injury (it's why he's on IR--further playing would only deteriorate his kicking more), and Vanderjagt has similar issues. At least with Novak we know what we're getting; Vanderjagt I suspect will only decline as the season moves forward.

Also, my point was much larger than Novak's accuracy. I address both injuries and prospects for next year, and I think that both categories make Novak the more appealing option.

So, to counter your impeccable logic. . .yes, he is.

But who knows? Perhaps we'll pick up Vanderjagt and suffer with him the rest of this season (like we would with Nick), and then have a great kicker on our team next year. I certainly hope that's what happens if we pick him up.

Novak is a temporary solution to our kicking problem. Is Vandy better? Statistically yes! Novak is too inconsistent. I know Vandy has been way off this year, but his career speaks for itself. Do I want him on the team? Only if Gibbs staples his lips shut.
