McNabb's Abdominal Injury

McNabb's Abdominal Injury

Post by skins81 »

Paul Glazer wrote an article where he referenced doing an MRI to rule out a sports hernia.
LINK
It's really speculation at this point on his part, but regardless, it is affecting McNabb's play.

Reid is calling it an abdominal strain. He says they are not looking for a second opinion at this point, but he's been known to downplay injuries before.

If it is a hernia, they will try to treat it conservatively, but a majority of cases requires surgery, and the recovery time is usually like 6-12 weeks to return to playing time.
The Eagles punter Dirk Johnson had the surgery in the offseason, and he's punting with the team now. Kendrell Bell had one last year, missed a bunch of playing time, came back to have a different groin injury and missed the rest of the year.

Either way, that sure looks like a plastic bag of ice down his pants.

From ESPN:

McNabb played with soreness in his chest, lower abdomen and a shin contusion. He finished with 365 yards passing and two touchdowns while throwing a career-high 52 passes.

"We'll see how he does [Tuesday] and how he comes back in Wednesday," Reid said. "He should be fine for the game. We have to get the soreness out."

McNabb was tested last week for a sports hernia, a tear in the abdominal area that likely would need surgery. Though the possibility he has a sports hernia hasn't been completely ruled out, McNabb is willing to play through the pain.

Asked if the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback could be shut down until after the bye week on Oct. 16, Reid said: "I don't think we're at that point. Not today."

McNabb also has a shin contusion. So lets count his injuries:

1. Bruised Ribcage
2. Abdominal strain possibly hernia
3. Pulled groin
4. Shin contusion

What the heck is going on? That's only in a couple weeks too. The entire Eagles squad is just decimated with injuries. The only thing I can imagine is that Andy Reid has been pishing these guys too hard.

BTW, looks like Akers is out against KC.

Can we not make fun of McNabb?

Mock him for doing stupid commercials or something, but not for being injured.

I wouldn't wish a hernia on anyone!

why not make fun? the guy has been a thorn in our side for 5 years. i didn't wish it on him..... maybe a little happy he has to deal with it, but, i didn't wish it on him. nor would i wish injury on anyone. but it happens. its a physical sport. when it happens to really important people, especially ones you have to play, you have to gameplan to attack it. i would. our coaches will do the same. thats life.

do you think that teams last year weren't like 'hey, the skins lost jansen for the year, the right side of the line is toast'? hell no. they were lickin their chops. ray brown was solid, but he is no jansen at the age of 40. we saw all sorts of blitz packages come over that side of the line last year. same as we should be doing.... kicking them while they are down(or at least not at 100%[pun intended for the whole akers thing  ]) My 2 cents

Yesterday, Reid said McNabb was "pretty clear" about his injury and probably would not consult more doctors.

A sports hernia, which is a tear in the abdominal wall, would likely require surgery at some point.

If the injury is an abdominal strain, which is higher in the abdomen, McNabb's chances of responding to treatment are greater, according to Arthur Bartolozzi, chief of sports medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital and a former team physician for the Eagles and Flyers.

A minor strain could take seven to 10 days to heal, but a more serious one would require four to six weeks of rehabilitation, Bartolozzi said.

Reinjuring the area, which is not hard to do in a brutal sport, obviously prolongs the healing time.

McNabb better be careful...

All those injuries are gonna hit him like a ton of bricks halfway through the season and he might be sidelined for more than a few weeks...

The Eagles are stupid not to bench him and give him this week and the bye week to fully recover. His injuries are just going to get more aggravated with each hit he takes and dude is not looking too mobile these days. My 2 cents

Andy Reid seems to be driving his players into the ground. How can he put key guys like McNabb and Akers out there just to further injure themselves? It's absolutrly rediculous!

Just look at Pennington. From what I've heard, he hurt his shoulder on the first two sacks but he only caused the major damage when he went back out there when Fiedler got hurt. What were Herm and Chad thinking. Football players have to be tough but there are times when it is just stupid to have them out there. If it was the playoffs it might be different but Week 3?! You're just setting your guy up for serious injury and a blown season.

In all those cases, Reid and Herm said something to the effect of "Well, they told me they were okay to go back out there." :?: Of course they said that! Players always feel like they can go out and play unless their names are Jerry Slackhouse or John Abraham. It's the coaches job to make tough decisions that may lose games but help their season.

The Eagles need every win. There is no guarantee they will make the playoffs, and if they do they might need homefield advantage.

The upcoming schedule is a rough one, with road games against the AFC west and a number of division games.

I can see it coming - what about the games they won with Feeley? Look at who they played. They only faced one team with a winning record (Giants) and lost.

The Eagles are significantly weaker without McNabb.

True to form, Andy Reid soft-pedaled the extent of McNabb's injury.
McNABB HAS SPORTS HERNIA

He needs the surgery now. If he gets it, he can come back and be 100% by the playoffs, but Reid isn't doing that.

He's going to have his 100milliondollar QB try to play through it, which is fine. Players have played whole seasons with hernias before. But if the play action and the designed roll out are like what 90% of what your plays are based on, and you are no longer a threat to run, your playbook becomes that much easier to defend.

They must be hoping to get wins early, maybe get the surgery midseason as they coast into the playoffs, and be ready for the postseason.

If that is truly what they are planning, I see this plan blowing up in their faces.

Why have so many Philly players suffered from this? I swear, there iss something seriously wrong with their training or their medical staff. They are all hurting. I thought this was a funny quote from the article:

In the treatment room, the trainers will work on the flexibility in his groin area.

Fine, he may be able to play through it but here's the problem. He is going to take a lot more hits and this is going to lead to bigger issues down the road. They're just setting him up for more serious injury.

If that's their strategy, so be it.

Look for Philly to finish 2nd or 3rd in the NFC this season.
