coincidence? nope, just pure hating on the Skins.

Contracts are working out great. Thanks ;-)

Actually, more like 9 mil for brunell, 11 if we keep him for another season. Not bad for such a knowledgeable tutor to Ramsey.

If you weren't such a knob, you'd know we aren't mediocre at all. We have a great great defense which is missing about 4 starters, much improved Special Teams, and one of the top rushing attacks in Clinton Portis. The only thing mediocre is Brunell, and that's quite a stretch to even call him mediocre. Now that Ramsey is in, you'll start seeing how mediocre we are.

The Jets would be a lot more mediocre than you seem to think we are if you had half the injuries we have.

Happy about a moral victory? Not sure what moral victory your talking about, but I know for sure that most here are pretty happy Ramsey is finally in.

Other than that, for us being 3-6, I'm also pretty happy our defense is so good, and our RB is Clinton Portis. It could be much much worse you know. We could be the Dolphins....

If that chart is right, and I have no reason to doubt it, we are way over paying for lavar. He's a good player but he hasn't produced at least for my liking to be worth that much money. He's basically locked into the skins cause there is no way any team could pick up his contract

LOL...Yea the starting QB for the last 2 years needed brunell and his contract to help him get his starting job back, after the season is shot?

Good one!

Brunell is due to receive a $500,000 roster bonus on April 1, league sources said, and the Redskins would face a steep $7.165 million salary cap hit in 2005 if he retires or the team releases him before then; if Brunell is cut or retires after June 1, Washington would be penalized $1.93 million against the 2005 cap and another $5.7 million against the 2006 cap. Before this season began, many NFL executives believed the Redskins already were headed to a salary cap crisis by 2006.

Here is the whole article:

This is pretty close to what I posted earlier in this thread....
1niksder wrote:He got $1,433,000 this year so if week cut hom at the end of the year or before June 1 2005 we take a $7.167 million hit on next years cap.
If we wait until after June 1st then he'd count $1,933,000 for next year and $5,234,000 in dead money for 2006.
If we wait until after next year to let him go the we'd pay him $2.193 million (including bonus money) for 2005
We would still have that $5.234 million to account for, meaning if he's released before June 1 2006 we pay it all then or if we release him after that date then it would be $1.433 million in 2006 and $3.841 mil in 2007

Thus will have all the talking heads saying we are going to be in cap hell next year or 2006 at the latest (They normally wait until the end of the season, but I think they will get a early start on "The Danny" this time around).

However we do have a few options.(if there is a roster bonus for 2005 then there maybe other bonuses in future years that are included in that $8.6 million)

1.We can cut Brunell before Apr 1 and save a half Million but eat the other $6.6 million in 2005

2.Let him hold a clipboard for a year then let him go and take a hit of $2 million in 06 and $3 million+ in 07

or option 3 which sounds more like "The Danny"

...Renegotiate Brunells contract before Apr.1 giving him more of his bonus money in 05 voiding any roster bonuses for 06-07 then cutting him at the end of the 05 season.
With the new TV deal hitting in 06 this may elimante this hold issuse, depending on how high the cap goes.
The only option that really would hurt the cap is option 1.....It's the option we all wants the team to take but it just doesn't make good sense Cap Wise.

And even with the early start the Talking Heads will be WRONG again :D

If Ramsey doesn't play well enough to earn the starting job, the Skins will have the money to go after Matt Hasselbeck (if he remains available) or another QB in the off-season.

They already have $6.7M in "dead" money on the 2005 cap (for cutting Trotter, Upshaw, Fiore and Brown). If they cut Brunell after June 1, the total dead money increases to around $9M in 2005 (comparatively, there was $10M of dead money on the 2004 cap).

But, this year, they have had several "contract year" players play really well. Smoot, Pierce, Salave'a, and Lott have been major contributors and are not signed for 2005. If they intend to keep those players (who combined only cost about $2.5M) it will likely cost them around $6M in 2005. Adding in currently signed players (around $68M without Brunell), the Skins will have a total cap number around $83M.

The 2004 cap was $80M. Each year it increases according to league revenue numbers -- in 2002 it was $71M, in 2003 it was $75M. Assuming that trend, the 2005 cap should be around $86M. That doesn't appear to leave too much room to add players. (An underlying issue are "cap credits," which are too difficult to predict. A team recieves credit towards the following years' cap if certain incentives that counted towards the current years' cap are not earned. So, the Skins could increase their 2005 cap if 2004 incentives are not earned. This happened last year with Bruce Smith's contract.)

But, the team could clear room through cuts and contract restructuring. Prime targets are Chris Samuels (could save around $3.5M by cutting), Renaldo Wynn (save $3M), Rod Gardner (save $1M) and Chad Morton (save $0.5M).

Going forward, cap-wise, it would be great for Ramsey to succeed, and the 2004 OL draft picks to step it up in 2005. Otherwise, they would need to cut players at positions they need talent in order to go after a QB like Matt Hasselbeck, and a couple of OL.

So, as Gibbs said himself on Monday, the cap is the most over-talked-about part of the NFL. It's not too difficult to work it properly. Plus, with the new TV contracts in effect for 2006 and beyond, and the player's union seeking an increase in the caps for 2007 and beyond (right now, 2006 is the last "capped" year, which is why you see such crazy numbers, the Skins should be fine. Don't buy the hype that the Skins will be ruined by the cap, because it isn't true. People that hold that opinion simply don't understand the cap.

That said, let's hope that they have another solid draft in 2005, because that is the easiest and best way to a build championship team.
