what's up with Trent Murphy?

Post by riggofan »

Curious what you guys think is going on with Trent Murphy? Haven't seen much out of him so far this season, and the team was kind of hyping him up earlier.

Jason Reid has been telling this story on 980 lately. He says he spoke with a defensive coach last year (who is not with the team anymore) who told him "Trent Murphy can't play". Reid says his response was, "What do you mean he can't play? He's your second round pick." Apparently the coach said, he's too slow and can't get to the quarterback. Said something to the effect of "Wait nine months and you'll see him on the bench".

I know some people will doubt the source, but I don't think Reid just completely makes these stories up. I also remember a lot of posters here were critical of the Murphy pick last year. Just curious:

1) Whether you believe the story or not, does it look like there is any truth to the criticism?

2) If Murphy really can't replace Orakpo at all, then WTF is up with Bruce Allen??? Amerson and Murphy? Is this like Vinny all over?

I think Murphy would have been a situational player had Junior Galette not torn his ACL. I think the team spent most of the off-season looking for an upgrade at the position. I think Murphy's ceiling is limited.

No doubt about that, re:Galette. Maybe just too much to hope for to get a legit starter at OLB in the second round?

I think, for the most part, you get what you pay for with pass rushing linebackers. A quick glance at the draft history of linebackers says you don;t get much pass rushing value after the first round.

Maybe, but Scot's in charge now, so don't sweat it too bad.

I'm curious to the decline in BOTH of or olbs.. KerrigN has been pretty quite through three games as well. Hope our pass rush can step it up a notch, the interior linemen have been playing well enough you'd think the outside rushers would be getting home more often

Preston Smith has looked very good getting after the QB. Why hasnt he had more reps?

I heard C00ley comment on him yesterday on the radio, and he was pretty much like "meh" on Preston Smith. Said he hadn't done much to impress yet. He had the strip/fumble but that was taking advantage of a play that Hatcher created.

Wasn't down on Smith, but seemed to be saying he was still a rookie learning the ropes.

To me it looks like he gets caught in no-mans land often. Not quite dropping back far enough to get into proper pass protection, or never quite getting to the QB when he rushes. Believing that Preston Smith will be getting more playing time soon. Maybe he can at least get to the QB.

I've wondered if Murphy wouldn't be a really good DE if he gained 25-30 more lbs. He's got he frame. He's certainly quick enough and strong enough for that.

Not worried about Smirh. He's learning. Will be better later this year and beyond.

He'd need more than that for 3/4 DE. I doubt he could carry that without losing a lot of quickness.
