Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I find this hard to believe. If it's true, then I want to know why we didn't keep the kicker that we drafted over Forbath last year.

I'm trying to find the exact quote from twitter, but it was something along the lines of Hocker was more inconsistent than Forbath in training camp. And had similar KO issues. And not to mention we didn't have the special teams injuries we have this year.

Hocker and Kai were neck and neck all camp.. Hocker had at least one more made fg and less misses- his KOs were DEFINITELY better hence him having the job our new kicker tried to get

For FGs during training camp, I'll have to rely on what other people say, because I don't remember those reports myself.

But I do remember his kickoffs in games being significantly better. He didn't boom it out of the end zone every time, but he consistently got the ball deeper with greater hang time. Forbath can barely get the ball into the end zone, and even when he does it's a line drive kick that hurts our chances of covering it properly. You can see the difference in distance (but not hang time) in the play-by-play from the games:

http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201408230 ... playbyplay
http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/201408280 ... playbyplay

My impression at the time was he got cut because he missed a FG in his final preseason game.

Extra accuracy would trump touchbacks if ...

1 We had good coverage units and

2 We were a contender.

Both 1 and 2 fail so touchbacks trump extra accuracy ... which Kai may not have even had.

Gano actually has a huge leg and Hocker's is pretty big as well ... and we DRAFTED him. Unreal. Bonehead move last fall to cut Hocker.

ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS Consistent, upright three-step approach on placements. Good trajectory on kicks, gets them up quickly with a strong downward strike on the ball. Misses are just outside of the uprights to the left or right, not major misfires. Flashes 55-yard range with NFL-caliber height on the kicks, not line-drives. Excellent strength and height on kickoffs, times well over 4.0 seconds consistently and gets the ball to the middle or front part of the end zone even with nice trajectory.

WEAKNESSES Needs to show that he can make the game-winning kick with everything on the line. Must be consistent in the urgency of his approach on placements against NFL rushers.

John Wroth · Lamar University
This kid can flat out kick. I saw him kick in high school. He regularly put KICKOFFS through the uprights. Take a moment and go the the FSU athletics website and read his bio. He holds about 4 all time scoring records in the NCAA.

Time to call a spade a spade:

1) IF SM made the call is a bad one;

and

2) IF SM did not make the call, somebody (Gruden?) or others (Allen et al) made a bad decision which reflects poorly on him and show a limited authority in his post due to interference.

Either way, not great. Just sayn'

Which call?

Releasing Gano, Hocker, or Forbath ... or keeping Forbath on the 53 until this week?

You might be right, but is it really time to make this call yet? Dustin Hopkins was a recent sixth round draft pick out of FSU. Maybe SM just likes him better than Forbath?

I get the argument... Forbath has ALWAYS sucked at KO's... And Paul and Hayward were lost a while back. Soooo I still don't understand why this didn't happen BEFORE the first game. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen... It just reeks of scapegoating. Scapegoating is cowardly and dishonest.

Here's a guess on how it all went down.

Scot arrives, starts watching tape, and sets some priorities. At the bottom of his list is Kai. Notes say something like "Needs to be replaced eventually as he lacks touchback/long FG leg."

At some point during camp, Scot tells Jay "I'm looking for a leg so don't be surprised when I release Kai and replace him with someone you've never heard of."

Timing is fairly irrelevant since we are not a contender.

It's possible Scot was simply waiting to see whom the Saints would cut - Hopkins or Hocker.

Stop making sense.

In which case, the move would have been made immediately, to eliminate the risk that another team would make a move first. THAT would have made sense.

Perhaps. Scot's probably pretty attuned to the market. Hopkins might stick ... might not. He's an upgrade. No real urgency here.

I like are new kicker with field goals, Point after touchdown, and kickoff. Btw Hocker missed a 30 yard field goal for the Saints in clutch last night. He was lucky that Brees threw to CJ Spiller to win the game in OT.
