The Washington Redskins are planning to release kicker Kai Forbath and sign free agent Dustin Hopkins to fill his spot, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Forbath Done
Just saw this on ESPN.com. There wasn't a link to it, but it was on the homepage, top right corner.
Schefter: Redskins to dump Forbath
Kai Forbath's 46-yard missed FG will apparently be his last for the Redskins. A source tells Adam Schefter that Washington will release Forbath and sign former Saints and Bills kicker Dustin Hopkins.

Re: Forbath Done
Redskins kicked him of the roster
I'll have to look into the new guys stats. That one missed kick must have really irked Gruden.

Re: Forbath Out?
Kai needed to get a lot better at kickoffs - his FG % was good but you have to get the ball deep on kickoffs
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Re: Forbath Done
I don't think the rumored new guy, Dustin Hopkins, has ever even played a game in the NFL. He was hurt prior to the opener in 2013 for the Bills, and never regained the starting job or a roster spot.

While I agree, Jock, and I suspect there are ducks all lined up in the background, this will smell of scapegoating to an earnestly cynical and weary fan base. "Look, fans! We're fixing it!!!" Forbath did not cost that game... Yet, an ugly offensive collapse in the second half can be cured by firing the kicker? Weak.

ABSOLUTELY agree - actually, as soon as I read the post, I thought that this was a reaction - Forbath has been consistent and while his distance on kickoffs was a concern it's not exactly new or really horrible

Re: Forbath Out?
Meanwhile, Zach Hocker, who we used a 6th rounder on last year looked pretty good for NO yesterday. Man when will we learn with FG kickers. Forbath will be signed be someone soon (Jacksonville perhaps) and will be a model of consistency for years just like all the other kickers we've let get away (Novak, Gano, Suisham) just to name a few. We haven't had consistency in the K position since Chip Lohmiller.

Zach Hocker should have won the position last year... His release was one of those "say what?" moments.

Yeah I don't quite get this move. Sucks that Kai missed that kick yesterday, but does anybody remember the decade+ long nightmare that our kicking position was before he got here?
Just seems like there isn't anything new going on with Forbath. Could have dealt with this last year or before camp.

Good luck to him....and like the other 2 previously released (Swishy and Gano), Forbath will HOOK ON to a team and do well. Isn't that how it goes?

The ironic thing:
August 2014 skins declare:
Forbath > Hocker
Sept 2015 NO declare:
Hocker > Hopkins
Then:
Skins cut Forbath for Hopkins.....

Oh --- and that 47 yarder he missed wasn't easy. The real issue was running 5-8, 193 Thompson to the left side on 3rd and 3. The snap and hold weren't perfect either. Forbath should have made it, but it wasn't NEARLY bad enough to cut the dude for.

Re: Forbath Out?
I suspect — or at least, I hope — this has more to do with his performance on kickoffs than it does the missed kick from yesterday.
Oh well. Unless we get really lucky, we're in for another several-year stretch of kicker lottery. The last time was a blast, so I can't wait to see what we get this time around!

Re: Forbath Out?
Then again, maybe this was part of McCloughan's plan all along. Is the new kicker we signed 6'5" and 280?
Re: Forbath Out?
Stupid ass move
The guy has hit 88% of his field goals in the last 3 years.
How in the hell is this a God idea.

Re: Forbath Out?
Just read on twitter from Keim:
Here's an important point to note in releasing Kai Forbath: the loss of coverage players such as Niles Paul and Adam Hayward made his lack of distance on knockoffs a much bigger issue. The Redskins need someone to take pressure off the kick coverage unit.

Okay fine sign a kicker for kickoffs, but don't release one that knows how to kick filed goals.
I bet Forbath is picked up by another team.
Re: Forbath Out?
who cares if a good player goes to another team - it's a mistake to let a good player go - end of story
OTOH - we pick up good players from other teams - we all hope those players do well for us - should we just keep every good player we get and never let them go - there are lot's of great players that don't suit what a franchise needs and end up having good careers elsewhere
that's what happens in the NFL

Re: Forbath Out?
I think everyone knows kickoffs have been an issue, however, so is a kicker who can't even attempt field goals of fifty plus yards due to lack of leg strength. It's probably a little easier to connect on 88% of your attempts if they're all from 45 yards or shorter. If you get to the opposing 35 and come away with no points, here at Slappy's, that's a big problem. Bonus points to anyone who gets that reference.
