I was watching CSN recently and Ross Tucker was being asked about Sherff's move to RG...does that mean we got him too high in the draft, blah, blah, blah.....

As most of you know, Tucker played OL.

He said, Right Guard is the 2nd most important position on the OL, as you rarely get any help there and most of the time, offenses run to the right.

Also, I agree, if Moses is showing he can play RT really well, moving Sherff inside is a real luxury to have.

I sure won't complain that the skins drafted an Olineman early...I complained about our drafts always being little guys so I'm really happy!!!

I'm really looking forward to getting back to having a NFC East, smash-mouth, approach to our O-line, after the Shanahan style zone blocking scheme.

LangleyParkJoe --- I will refrain from quoting your thorough post, but it looks to me like the Callahan hire is already paying dividends......

I have to say that I am most optimistic about our OL improvement from last year to this one over any other position group. That being said, it takes at least 10 regular season games for a new OL to understand how to play with one another as a unit, but once they gell, it looks like we'll have a decent group -- barring injuries.....

Riggo --- after watching the first episode of hard knocks - Texans, I did see JJ Watt embarrass Scherff on a play --- so I was worried (and still am to a degree) that the coaching staff didn't think Scherff was a viable option at RT. That being said, it was JJ Watt. The dude is a beast.

Side note --- Being in Houston, you get a ton of news about Watt and he is just an incredible guy OFF the field (at least based on what you read about -- he could be totally different behing closed doors, but who knows). So much of what he does for the community and others doesn't get national press like this: http://www.click2houston.com/news/meet-jj-watts-friend-trey/25544194, but man he's got to be one of the nicest, most philanthropic (of his time) dudes in pro sports. Wish there were more like him in the NFL.

That sounds more like a surprise than a mystery doesn't it? :)

Agree, but it was a mystery to me when I was watching the game as to why Moses was starting and Scheff was at OG.

For those of us following training camp closely this was no surprise nor mistery .. even when the Texans came to town we were seeing this pair used as such. No biggie

I think it's funny that there was ever any real discussion concerning the issue of possibly having "wasted" the #5 overall pick on a guard. Please.

Would any of the following have been worth the #5 overall pick?

Logan Mankins
Joe DeLamielleure
Forrest Gregg
Russ Grimm
Gene Upshaw
Larry Allen
John Hannah

... and was it Ogden who started at guard and moved to tackle?

It seems to me that if a guy plays at an all-pro level for a decade, he's worth the #5 overall pick almost regardless of position. #shrug

We should look into signing Jake Long. He was a very early pick back in what 2011? Clearly the oline needs work or else the qb's will never survive!

Oddly enough they seemed to get better when Griffin went out. #-o

did you not notice the difference in the play calling? Griffin did not play well but the O line and play calling was a factor also
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

No, please explain to me the difference in play calling. What plays would you have called difference exactly?

Weird too that the o-line was horrible for Griffin, but suddenly march the ball up the field when McCoy came on in relief.

big factor was that Detroit also took their staring defense out after Griffin was out. Big difference there.

Robert wasn't playing against their starting defense. They have a TON of injuries, just like we do.

I recorded it I'll have to watch it this weekend. My guess is different players were on the field when Robert was off the field. Even though its mentioned they have injuries and their starters were not on the field. Still I'm sure there was a difference in skills. but you also have to factor in maybe it was different oline people playing when Robert left. That I don't know. But hopefully those oline players weren't doing it on purpose.

Side note, I remember reading an article and reading that some of the players weren't even aware that Robert left the game.

Check out Robert not willing to pull the trigger on his open first read with no rush in his face (yet) on virtually every drop back.

This.
Bob's apparent inability to even try to believe what he is seeing suggests that he is simply not developing into an NFL quarterback. He seems unable to move past a crisis in confidence... It suggests that foolish statements about his own perception of himself are a desperate attempt to convince himself...

A quarterback without confidence becomes Patrick Ramsey.

are you suggesting that the coaches purposely called plays that they KNEW Bob would struggle with? Kinda like setting him up for failure?

No! I think they are trying to get stuff on tape to better evaluate the players ... all of the players

the play calling changed to suit what they wanted to see but it was not the same as when Griffin was in there ...

Yeah, this is more of what I'm afraid of.....

http://espn.go.com/blog/washington-redskins/post/_/id/19242/redskins-ol-brandon-scherff-a-first-round-thumbs-down-so-far

In watching the DET game, I felt Scherff was playing at a below average grade, so I checked to see if people/media were expressing the same sentiment --- low and behold they were.

He is a rookie and the OL transition is one of the most difficult in the NFL, so I am not particularly worried --- but it would have been nice to see the guy hit the ground running....
