I hope you're wrong too. Honestly man, I just look at that defense and I don't feel optimistic about anybody coming in here and having much success immediately. Whether its Joe Barry or Vic Fangio. I guess that's why I'm not ready to get all up in arms about it. The defense is basically Ryan Kerrigan and ten other dudes at this point. :)

Why should Scot McGloughan be responsible for hiring the defensive coordinator rather than Jay Gruden? What coordinators has McGloughan been responsible for hiring in the past? What experience does he have with coaching?

Let's have McGloughan answer that question himself:
Although Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan will oversee the construction of the 2015 Redskins’ roster, he said he does not intend to hire the team’s next defensive coordinator.

That responsibility, McCloughan said, belongs to Jay Gruden.

“It’s Jay’s call,” McCloughan said. “The head coach hires the coaches.”

Which signals another bit of change in protocol under McCloughan. He feels strongly that Gruden's staff decisions must be left up to Gruden, who has been interviewing candidates since parting ways with Jim Haslett on Dec. 31.

Wow, everyone is all worked up over this hire. Scot should add 3-4 good defensive players from the draft and free agency this year and next and if we don't improve, Jay and Joe will be gone.

IMO, adding quality players over the next couple years is the most important thing anyway!

Having coaches that get along is really important --Jay and Bruce must like this guy, think they can get along with him, let it happen!

I know this has to be a Danny hire as no one likes him!

Ah don't worry man. If it doesn't work out, we'll find some way to blame Danny. :)

I just gotta say again, the bar for improving this defense is REALLY not very high. WE SUCK.

So if Fangio was hired it would have been SM call, but since Barry was hired it was Allen??

So it may not be that easy. Let's say that the GM drafts players to fit our system* and we ditch the coaches after this year. Next coach goes to a 4-3. Well we just wasted a year of draft picks, free agents, and player development then. It's not exactly as simple as plug and play.

*Despite talk about BPA, we wouldn't draft an undersized, penetrating DT, for example, because that player just doesn't work in a 3-4. Or a small sized OLB, like a Derrick Brooks, because 3-4 LBs are all big.

Are we still running 3-4...This guy grew up in the Tampa cover 2 D...not alot of 3-4 experience..

You know, I've had enough of us "winning the offseason" and making big splashes... but is hiring one coach with both experience AND success at his position too much to ask?

Let me be clear:

This is a Jay Gruden choice regardless of who is chosen. The final decision is made when THAT choice is brought up to the attention of the FO because the Team hires, not the HC. Different FO members may and often do give their views but it is STILL the prerogative of the HC to make the decision in most cases. This is a Jay Gruden choice notwithstanding different views in support and others offering other options. Clear now?

I don't disagree it isn't plug and play but good players can play in either.

Of course, there are some who can play one position, for example, the two LBs we had a few years back, Carter and Taylor. They were 3-4 players only.

With Gruden in charge, Barry the DC and Morris still on staff...any chance we go back to 4-3...Tampa2??

Clear as mud.

I'm really not sure what he is getting so up in arms about to be honest. The team clearly wanted Vic Fangio. Fangio preferred Chicago. The team hired their second choice. What do prerogatives and different views from the FO have to do with it?

Hold up a sec! I have an ingenious solution to that problem! We could just hire a coach who runs the 4-3 so we don't have to worry about it! We could, like, make it part of the interview/selection process even!!!

Confirm WHAT? That Vic Fangio took another job and we had to hire our second choice?

The hire was being scrutinized by the media five seconds after it hit twitter. No surprises there.

I'm actually finding this topic about our 4-3 v 3-4 personnel kind of funny. How many guys on that defense are we actually hoping will be around in another two or three years???

4-3 vs 3-4 in terms of our roster doesnt really matter... the guys worth keeping can do either. Then 3-4has had more recent success lately in the league especially with putting pressure on the qb.... but if you get the right 4 man front that can pressure without bringing linebackers in.... it dominates the 3-4 in my opinion.

I do think that Jay chose his DC - I also don't understand why it's that big a deal - if he made a bad choice, he will be gone soon ...

the franchise now has a GM and as long as Snyder let's him make the personnel choices here, I'm going to wait and see what happens

I really did not expect much from the next 2 seasons as Scot gets himself established here

many of us expected this franchise to have a very difficult time of it for at least a year - what's the big deal?
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
