anyone else here on it, or tried it? by no means am i overweight, but i'm trying to trim the fat(and beer gut). i've been working out for over a year solid, trying to cut fats and things like a normal diet, but wasn't really able to loose any lbs. after only a week of cutting the sugars and white flour, i've already lost seven lbs. i feel like i have more energy, and my workout seems a lot easier. i'm in the induction phase, which means i haven't been taking in more than 20 grams of carbs a day. the beer was my only setback. that was tough. i've taken to boss' habits and accepted rye, and hennessy as my drinks. i'm even used to the diet caffine free sodas now. i use splenda instead of sugar, and plan my meals ahead of time. i started out at 204 lbs, and am down to 197 in seven days. my goal is around 180 - 185, which shouldn't be all that hard to reach. i should be there in about another month. after that, its a maintenance diet which should be more than easy to handle.

just wondering if anyone else has tried it, or had similar, almost overnight success? :feedback;

Congrats on your weight loss success. I haven't tried any "diets" so to speak but when I played football from 1995-2000... my usual lunches consisted of rice cakes and water. Yum!

Lately, I've had real good success. I, like you HS666, am not overweight but have a rootbeer gut. Over the past few months I've lost 20 pounds just by eating less. I am by no means disciplined enough or unlazy enough to try a diet. I just eat less of what I have around the house and it worked out pretty well. I think my highest weight was early this year at 186 and I went down to 165.

HS666, whatever you try to do....load up on a lot of water each day. That helps tremendously. (Coming from a guy that would love to drop 50 lbs.)

T-6 I prefer the South Beach diet. Low carbs vs. no carbs. I really don't follow it to a T. I just feel much better when I skip the carbs, I started running again and the weight is coming off fast.

i've been trying to get my running in as well. i just started it about the same time i started the diet, and let me tell you, its killing me. :lol: after my jog, i feel like i've been beat down, and i'm about to die. i thought after a week or so it would get to be a little easier...... but it hasn't. oh well, i know its good for me despite the pain, so i'll just keep on keepin on.

Try taking some motrin before you run, it may ease the after pain a little...it suck getting old!!

My doctor told me that the hogwash (excuse the expression) that we needed to drink all that water everyday to "flush" the body or lose weight is just that "hogwash". He said an 8 oz. glass with each meal is all you need. You can also Overhydrate your body which makes you retain waterweight. Who really knows though... everyone says something different.

Keep at it Hailskin666, your body is just telling you how much it wants you to stop. Don't give in, soon you will win the war and you body will get used to the new regime.

I lost 40lbs the old fashioned way, diet (eating less, eating fresh fruits, meats and veggies - no packaged foods although Sun. are cheat days), and exercise. At 6' I was 195lbs and got down to 155. Now I have settled in at around 165.

Good luck - remember, being healthy is the key, and drink lots of water - especially if you plan on going out in the heat - better to be overhydrated than underhydrated.

Congrats... I tried it for about a month. It hurt me in both the gym and in class. I could not concentrate and it hurt my grades big time. In the gym my bench suffered and I did not have the energy and will power to keep going. I tried energy drinks, you name and it was still bs.


Now they are saying its a unhealthy diet and it recommends you eat the forbiddens but just in moderations.

I think exercise and water is key to any diet.

I agree, exercise and good eating habits is the best way to go. I am an avid gym rat. I tried the Atkins to try and get very lean but it made me too made me lazy. It is a very unhealthy diet. Once you are on it for some time, you will realize that. When I did it, I cut out the carbs but only ate lean protein. Getting no fat and no carbs in my diet hurt me a lot. If you are disciplined enough to count your carbs, you should be disciplined enough to eat less. Weight Watchers is a really good diet, but it is kind of a hassle. Hang in there, whatever you do. Keep exercising- it will give you more energy to want to exercise more- which will make you feel better and when you feel better you will want to eat better so you can look better. :up:

If you're going to lift weights you need carbs. You're going to burn them off in the gym. The Atkins thing is more for people who aren't trying to bulk up.

Well if you just apply basic science, you should realize what the Atkins COULD do to you...

Those carbohydrates that you desperately cut out of your diet to prevent fat build up are the same carbs that are responsible for creating most of the body's energy.

Anybody who has ever done a sr. high school Biology class should have done glycolosis and Kreb's cycle where you learn how the body processes carbohydrates into ATP's or energy. The body stores carbs in the form of glycogen which is the body's 'fuel source'.

Carbohydrates are NOT the problem in anyone's diet... the fact is, the over-consumption of any macronutrient will lead to fat gain, not just carbohydrates.

When you try something like the Atkins diet, you are asking your body to take energy from sources that are high in fat as opposed to high in the more efficient energy sourced carbohydrates. This can affect different people in different ways. Some people may respond to a low carb, high fat or protein diet... some may not. A lot depends on your natural metabolism.

But there's no getting around the fact that the most efficient source of energy that the body has... are carbohydrates.

Sure you'll lose weight on the Atkins diet... you're not consuming anything that would create fat... unfortunately, you're probably not eating things that create much energy either.

I think the best advice anyone can give you in terms of a 'personal' diet is to see what works for you, and to be knowledgable both about what the body needs to be healthy, and about the foods that you eat...

If from memory, I'm impressed. :wink:

Anyway, my wife and I are currently on the South Beach Diet, and I can definitely tell there is a difference in the way my body is functioning.

The first day was horrible. I could not taste a thing (sugar withdrawal). But, after a week of doing it, I've managed to shed some inches from my waist (I'm able to wear some of my pants that weren't fitting right), and I've overcome the "sluggishness" I experienced during the first few days. Plus, my wife has been making some AWESOME dishes that are SBD friendly (from the SBD cookbook). I've truly been eating well, and am very happy.

I don't miss the sugary stuff as much as I thought I would. I like the results, and look forward to reaching my goal. The good thing about the SBD is that it was developed by a cardiologist and is heart-friendly.

PLus, with this diet you actually eat!!! It's not a calorie countin' diet, and I'm full most of the time. Woohoo!!!! :D

it is true that everyone is different. i think the first day or so was the worst for me as well. i'm sure it had a lot to do with no sugar intake. when you cut carbs, your body resorts to lipolysis, which is the natural process of burning fat for energy. lipolysis is also the reason that the weight loss is so significant. if your body dosen't have carbs to fuel it, it uses the fats from the foods you eat. and when it needs extra fuel that the foods aren't providing, it will burn body fat as a source of energy. cutting sugar also means your body dosen't have to create insulin. when your body has to create insulin, it also stores excess fats. thats why 9 out of 10 diets recomend that you cut sugars.
i doubt i will stay with the whole idea of not eating bread, because i think a sandwich is my favorite food on the planet. but i do think i will try to limit my sugar intake from here on out. it all seems to be working, because i'm up to nine lbs lost as of right now.

I switched to tortilla shells last year. Sure, they call them wraps and put all kinds of stuff in them now, but it's still the same old shell it always was. I like 'em because the big ones hold way more meat than sandwich bread ever could. :D

i can't wait. at a week and a half, i do miss my bread. i got some soy flour to make a pizza with, but i'm still in the induction stage, so i haven't gone there yet. i want some BREAD! :lol:

with the way my metabolism is, after maybe six more weeks, i'm hopeing i'll be able to easily take in around 60-70 carbs a day and still maintain my goal weight with relative ease. i lift on a regular basis, and have started jogging. i'm not trying to become mr. universe or anything, but i am trying to lead a healthier lifestyle.
some people have mentioned energy loss in the gym. i haven't had anything to resemble that, except maybe the first full day of low carb. i'm guessing that it was withdrawals from the sugar. i honestly think i have more energy than i did before. it was 98 degrees here today, with 90% humidity, which made the actual feel or heat index around 102. i worked my job outside today for the majority of the day. and still had enough energy to get a good 30 min lift in before i called it a day.

Actually, that's awesome. It's great to know that "alternate fuel sources" are being used.

Actually, last night I went to weigh myself, and, after 9 days on the SBD, I have lost 10-12 pounds (I didn't have an accurate weight measurent on day 0, so I'm giving an approximate figure -- 10 lbs for sure). :up:

I haven't even worked out yet. I will incorporate exercise as of this weekend.

if you do go back to bread, make sure it's whole grain bread, which is much easier to find recently. white bread, and breads made from 'enriched' flour, and as good as eating straight sugar. i make pizza dough from wheat flour and it's great, just takes a little getting used to. wheat flour can also be used to bread chicken as well.

i've been doing the south beach thing for about 5 months, and i have no idea how much weight i've lost (i haven't been keeping track), but at least i know how my body processes food, and i feel better, and have more energy.

definantly wheat bread. i didn't really eat too much white flour before i started. i think wheat bread just taste better.

I am pleased to revive this thread with the news that after 21 days on the South Beach Diet, I have lost 20 pounds!!! Wooha!!! It was easier than I thought. I never realized just HOW many carbs I would eat on a daily basis, until I started this diet.

This has been great. I'm looking forward to trimming down even more!
