Contract is probably backloaded but once again assuming there will be a salary cap in years to come, this move hurts our future even MORE.

DEADCAP's heaven.

We don't even know what the details of the deal is, we don't know if there will be a cap in the future nor do we know how much will count this year. I'm hearing it's a six-year, $89.2 million contract when you include the 2010 part of it and the $40 mil guaranteed is more like ten million and a bucket load of skill incentives. It appears this deal is nothing like the deals that Vinny use to hand out. :D

Vinny would have waited and used the tag which would have paid McNabb about $16 million next year.

Three is probably more like it.

But it's another head-scratcher from an organization that swore it was changing it's ways.

This don't fit with that.

With $40M guaranteed, it's still $13M+ for 3 years. It's still a lot of money GUARANTEED for a 34 (later this month) QB.

You can't do the math like that. AH again was really $42 million and it was back loaded, not front loaded. Let's wait to see the structure, then argue it

Until I hear the structure, I CAN, in fact, do the math like that.

Nobody else was going to offer him this kind of money, especially if there is a lockout next season. With the lockout, he was looking at the possibility of being a 35-year old free agent looking for a contract in 2012. From his perspective I think this was a no-brainer.

Guy has already made over 150 million in his career. At this point, he should be looking to play in a place where he has a chance to win, and where his coach doesn't throw him under the bus.

Now for the next two years we can just focus on other positions. Oline, defensive line and receivers. Fill those spots and we should have all the holes filled.

You forgot to mention running back, linebacker, and defensive back. Lots of holes there too.

True. But with athletes you never know how well they've handled their money. Brunell, at the age of 40, is jumping from team to team because he made bad investments and now has no money. Plus, there really aren't that many places for him to go at this point.

Has he really made $150 million or is that just the nominal value of the contracts he's signed over the year + an estimation of endorsements?

But even granting that he's made that much, like CanesSkins says there's no way to know how a player handles the money. You get the feeling that McNabb would be smarter with it than most players, but you never know.

Finally some potential good news...

JReidPost

Just heard from my guy, Jimmy Halsell, that Donovan McNabb is only guaranteed $3.5 million. That's sure a lot less than $40 million.

Well put, I agree. I don't get the kvetching from a bunch of people who haven't even seen the terms yet.

Hopefully, the terms include a right to rescind the contract within (3) business days. After last night's "performance", it would be best for both parties to part ways.

They paid McNabb $3.75 million in 2010 for the right to pay him $12.5 million in 2011 and control his rights. If the Redskins cut him after this season or trade him, they are only on the hook for the $3.75 million.

Stop with this leadership crap....Where was his leadership today.

I actually agree with this. I originally have been applauding his leadership, but yesterday he just sat on the sidelines -- very Jason Campbell-esk last night.

Do you think that Brady or Brees or any of the other "elite" QBs would have done that? No chance.

Here's what's floating around...
• 2010: $3.5 million signing bonus/$250,000 if active eight games
• 2011: $10 million option bonus/$2.5 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives
• 2012: $12.75 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives
• 2013: $13 million salary/$1.5 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives
• 2014: $13.75 million salary/$3 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives
• 2015: $13.55 million salary/$2.25 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

McNabb can earn up to $88 Million if the Redskins win the Super Bowl every year for the next 6 years, yes EVERY year for the entire length of the contract AND appearing and winning aren't the same thing.

I think those complaining about this signing has had the chair pulled from under them.

Every one of those bonuses and all the salary from 2011 on is terminable by the team's choice.

The only guaranteed in-your-pocket-now money is the $3.5M signing bonus.

This deal smells like Dan Snyder to me. That didn't last long, Snyder staying out of football personell decisions.

Snyder, please sell this franchise, you have destroyed it enough.

This is nothing like "the Danny"... McNabb would have pocked a good $30 Million if this was the owner sticking his nose where it needs to stay away from.

Very true. Now that the details are out, it's not as bad as I assumed. Do we know if any or all years are voidable on either end?

It all depends on whether or not they pay McNabb the $10 million option bonus this off season. If they do, it would trigger the rest of the contract and make Washington liable for McNabb's $2.5 million base salary in 2011. After that it's really a bunch of one year deals, with McNabb locked in and the Redskins all the options

If they do it before the option bonus is paid, they owe him nothing. If they pay it the are still only on the hook for the 2011 base or $2.5 million, then the new team would pick the contract

One of the contract's most significant points is a payment due this offseason, when the Redskins must decide whether or not to pay McNabb a $10 million option bonus. If they do, it would trigger the rest of the contract and make Washington liable for McNabb's $2.5 million base salary in 2011.

So in essence, the Redskins paid McNabb $3.75 million in 2010 for the right to pay him $12.5 million in 2011 and control his rights. If the Redskins cut him after this season or trade him, they are only on the hook for the $3.75 million.

Boiled down, the deal's real guarantee is $3.5 million, though if McNabb suffered a catastrophic injury this season and never played again, he would receive $25 more million.

Here is how the rest of the full deal breaks down, according to an NFLPA source:

• 2010: $3.5 million signing bonus/$250,000 if active eight games

• 2011: $10 million option bonus/$2.5 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2012: $12.75 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2013: $13 million salary/$1.5 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2014: $13.75 million salary/$3 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2015: $13.55 million salary/$2.25 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

I love this deal. Doesn't look like Dan's figerprints at all. Gives us an out the entire way and gives us some stability there while we remake the rest of the squad. Love it Bruce!
