LOL some of you just cannot be satisfied.
Picking Okung simply cus he's the "best" overall tackle is NARROW MINDED.
Mike/Bruce picked Trent because he fits the offensive scheme. So what if Okung is a bit more refined, he wouldn't thrive in what we're doing thus making his refinement pointless.

First and foremost, WECOME TO THE BURGUNDY AND GOLD NATION TRENT WILLIAMS!!!
I read all the banter and I'm kinda surprised that so many people are upset. He's an offensive lineman, widely believed to be the most athletic out there. I'm elated that we didn't pick Claussen or Berry @ #4.
As we sit here behind the keyboards behind our computers/smartphones/whatever, I think to myself, how can all these experts who know better than a superbowl winning coach be unemployed? I'm a fan, I can watch a few college games and read a few 'expert' opinions, but I personally, Shanahan probably has forgotten more football than I know.
So sit back, quit whining, and give the new regime a chance. Some people will NEVER be freaking happy.

Re: Welcome Trent Williams
Nice first post, unfortunately, it would be better suited for a bodybuilding forum. This, just so happens to be a forum about professional football and the Washington Redskins. If bench press was everything, then Arnold Schwarzenegger would have had probably taken a much different career path(pre-steroid testing that is).Okung wrote:And thank you Washington for taking Williams instead of Okung. Williams puts up 23 reps of 225lbs while Okung puts up 38 reps. Okung allowed only one sack all last year. Yeah, welcome Trent Williams and please remember to yell "look out" after each snap.
I'd love to see rankings for all current NFL o-lineman as players and then a second ranking list of how many bench press reps they can do of 225lbs. I'm pretty sure a lot of people would be surprised. Leverage is much more important than raw strength.

I think there only a couple people here who don't agree with the pick. sounds like most of us agree it was a good pick and fits the team better. The first post by "Okung" was cowardly. Obviously just a drive by posting (like a drive by fruiting in Mrs doubtfire

I can't remember who said it, it may have been Mike, or the dude on ESPN that used to play for Mike but he stated this scheme is about leverage. You don't have to be 400lbs to make the blocks in this scheme.
Now, what I don't understand is how you guys want EVERY coach that comes here to be Joe Gibbs. You want every year to be 1992 and the 80's. You want every RB to be John Riggins and every line to be the Hogs. And THAT is why you all WILL NEVER be satisfied. Get over it, it's done with. It's like you want the Joe Gibbs formula just with a younger face attached to it.
Wakeup call! It's 2010. Shanahan has his own philosophy and you were just fooling yourself if you thought he was going to come in here and have a power offensive line. You fooled yourself. Nobody else did it, nobody tricked you, there's no wool.
Trent Williams isn't strong enough for Redskins football?!
Redskins football has been mediocrity and crap.

Don't waste anymore of your time CLL.. if they don't get it by now, they never will... to further your point, this is the first year WITHOUT Vinny's involvement and I'm loving it. Our offseason has been great so far and they're slowly but surely doing what they need to do to establish themselves again in the NFC Beast.

I have a problem with this pick...
At what point do you have enough Williams' on the team???
There is the distinct possibility of 3 players named Williams setting up on the line of scrimmage on offense. That is too many, and will undoubtedly confuse older color men, such as Sam Huff...
That doesn't count the additional one on D...
this is just maddening

Welcome Mr. Williams to DC! Do your job and you will enjoy the ride!.
I don't know whether Williams is a good pick or not, but judging from the majority of reports, he's not. We are taking a big chance. I won't bother with the list of his deficiencies-- since they are well known. I just want to note that almost everyone here wanted Okung and worried about getting him until Shanahan picked Williams, then there was a shift in attitude. Why? From where I sit, the shift is slavish, sort of a blind falling in line behind management, which I consider unattractive.
If I had said three months ago that as GM I wanted to concentrate on old, has-been players and build the defensive line rather than the offensive line, wave a cape at FA's who could help, trade several of our remaining draft picks, shift to the 3-4, then draft Williams instead of Okung, I would have been hooted off the board.
The draft is now almost over (for us) and we still have an OL filled with question marks and no RT, still probably one of the worse in the NFL. We have a 33 year QB with accuracy problems, three over-the-hill running backs, and probable camp fodder, plus a coach shouting about how good Heyer is.
This, so far, has not been a rebuilding year. Now, a bunch of you are shouting for outlandish trades to redeem the situation-- the trades being called for are nonsense. In Shanahan and Allen I do not trust. Management has done next to nothing that's not questionable. It's the opposite of sound. It's chance-taking and radical, ideosyncratic and without clear objectives. Virtually every acquisition we've made has a big question mark beside it? Even the ones we haven't made are questionable.

CH.. it's well documented I wanted Okung. Yep, my attitude shifted because to me it's common sense.. See, am I going to just sit here and complain about it or am I going to say to heck wit it and support our team? For me its obvious. I like the Williams pick because he's a OL and we didn't draft outside our need. Is Okung better? Possibly.. does that mean Williams won't do good, no not really. Is ANY pick in a NFL Draft gauranteed to be a super star pick? Nope, no gaurantees at all.
- McNabb is over the hill because of his age? 2009 Season he threw only 10 INT's and had 22 TD's. So I'm guessing you'd rather have kept JC as our starter or draft a rookie to come into the NFC Beast ready to give it all huh? (No need to mention those DL that are a menace in the NFC Beast who I'm guessing would love to go after a rookie)
- Chance taking and radical dude??? We have veteran players who've been in the league for a while that want to win NOW. LJ, CP, WP as our RB's..

- What outlandish trades are you talking about by the way? The only trade that is ALMOST certain is us giving up JC. Fat Albert isn't gauranteed to be traded unless we can get value for him. What else, Rocky? Backup what your saying man.
I don't know CH, I can understand you not trusting our new FO people because its their first year, I can even respect that P.O.V. but I'm all in.. 100%.. because if we didn't have these guys, we'd have Vinny and lawd only knows who would be our next HC. Kinda seems like you'd rather go back to the way it was with all the complaining you've been doing about Bruce and Mike

I can only speak for myself but I simply wanted the best tackle in the draft.
Why?
Because I wasn't educated in why Trent is potentially a better fit. So after reading articles and listening to Shanahan explain why he chose Trent, I'm satisfied. It makes sense, they did their homework. Mike has won TWO SUPERBOWLS AFTER 1992!!!!! I'm inclined to take his word until actions prove otherwise.

Most of what I've read about the Williams choice is positive and the risk is exaggerated. But I'm surprised to hear this, up until now you'd been so patient with the new regime...

How have the last 2 non-chance-taking, sane, common, and with clear objective coaches done for us? I'm not saying its the perfect choice because I don't know. I like the fact that we got somebody that would theoretically fit our system rather than this "best player on the board" crap that I hear spouted all the time by the networks. We filled a need. Just because we didn't fill the other needs on our line YET, doesn't mean this pick is any worse. If we had 5 picks in the first round and drafted an entire new O-line would we be happy? No. You've got to start somewhere and I think this is as good a place as any. I'm anxious to see how it plays out.

Okay. I'll just say it. The elephant in the room that no one has the ball$ to say.
Those of us who really know football, know enough to understand that you don't know everything. This is especially true with Offensive Linemen. Why?
1. We don't have access to the same film that coaches do. You cannot grade a lineman based purely on the side Television camera angle.
2. Unless you have a copy of the Oklahoma playbook, and a script of every play, you have absolutely NO idea what protection they run on a given play, and what everyones responsibility is.
Put simply, O Line is one of the hardest positions to grade by the FANS. And, that is what you are CH, and Brad. You're fans. You don't know what you are talking about for sure. You would not have even known Okung was rated higher unless 1) you googled a mock draft, or 2) listened to the draft experts like Mayock, McShay, and Kiper. The GM's who comment, like Charlie Casserly liked Williams better. But, what do they know.
All in all, you make yourself look like you are either a "Debbie Downer", or supremely delusional in repeatedly saying that you KNOW how good Williams is, or will be.
You listen to mock drafts, and TV people. The coaches have the real game film, practice film, workouts, scouts, interviews, and conversations with coaches when making a decision.
You don't know what you don't know. Get over it. Those of us who realize this aren't "slavishly" following Shanahan. We simply realize that we aren't in a position to say for certain that he's wrong when we don't have all the information.

What I do know is that I watch Okung, I see him dominate Sergio Kindle, (and Brian Orakpo last year). I watch Trent Williams against Kindle, and he gets ruined. What you assume is that Mike Shanahan thinks Trent Williams is a better pass blocker than Russell Okung. He doesn't. He is gambling on his scheme as opposed to taking the better player. I have no problem if you want to think NFL coaches are always right, because we all know they never mess up. But don't tell me I don't know the difference between giving up a sack and not giving up a sack.

And you just prove his point even further...

You are a better evaluator of talent than a 2 time superbowl winning NFL Head Coach. An architect of a scheme that is mirrored around the NFL and is arguably one of the greatest running schemes in NFL History. You are better than Mike S. That sir, is a hilarious.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!

No, that is not what I'm saying. Mike Shanahan KNOWS Okung is better. He just thinks his scheme is all that and he can put anybody he wants in there and they will shine. He might be right. But as of right now, Russell Okung is a much better pass blocker.
