On the "Gibbs Guy" Topic:

A "Gibbs Guy" is very easily defined... someone who understands the concept of the word "TEAM".... thats it plan an simple.... They could be the smartest, or the dumbest, cocky, or shy, Catholic, or Jewish... those things don't matter.... It's the "TEAM" concept that he wants his guys to believe... that's it.... nothing else....

Why do you think we took Taylor over Winslow, surely we needed a TE more than we did a Safety.... Who was the "biggest" surprise signing this offseason?? Some say Portis.... but everybody knew we were getting a new RB.... the surprise offseason guy was Thrash coming back, we had plenty of WR depth, so why did we pick him up.... Because he's content with what ever his role is, as long as the TEAM wins..... Griffen, Daniels, Marcus Washington, these guys aren't big talker's.... they want there play on the field to do the talking, Springs..... funny guy, just wants to come in here and do his job.... make everybody forget about Champ.... as a matter of fact, is there one guy that we picked up that would be even considered a "possible" distraction to the TEAM concept.... I don't think so....

these guys sound familiar huh.... kinda like monk, mann, coleman, sanders, edwards, green, harvey, all the "Hogs"... the list could go on and on... none big talkers.... all let there play do the talking....

Thats what a Joe Gibbs type guy is.... he puts the TEAM first.....

And on that note, no thanks on Burress.... tons of talent, i just don't think he has the maturity to put the team first.... plus the fact that he'd probably cost too much.

Does anyone really believe that gardner can garner the skins anything but a third or fourth string DL? I mean we know that the NFL values DL waaaay more than WR.
ESPN Insider had him listed in "long shots", a player with an outside chance of being released:
Plaxico Burress, WR Pittsburgh
Burress is in the final season of his contract and is unhappy the Steelers haven't opened talks to an extension. There is some speculation Pittsburgh wants the inconsistent Burress to play for a new contract in the hope he gives a better effort. Burress has responded by missing a mini-camp and skipping offseason workouts.

If the sides can't resolve their differences, Burress could be let go. Burress is coming off a disappointing season and has excellent size and good speed. Baltimore lost out in the Terrell Owens sweepstakes, and Dennis Northcutt is staying in Cleveland, so they might have interest.

Possible new teams: Baltimore, Chicago, and Washington.
This article was posted yesterday.

I guess if he is released, the speculation may be to sign him and trade Rod Gardner... possibly for a defensive lineman.
I've definetly heard the media use the "coach's guy" term before. I've heard it said of Parcell's for sure. I think I've even heard it for Brian Billick, and Marvin Lewis.

JH, I don't look down on anybody who uses it.

But my question is, why can't you call the players "Spurrier/Allen/Lombardi/etc Guys" if they give 110% for the team?

I'm just saying that if players give their all for any head coach, then why should Gibbs be the only coach that has the moniker toi rate players "Gibbs guys"?

Jake:

If you use that logic, you'll never hear anyone being called a "Spurrier" guy because he was such a bad coach, no one gave even 75% for him.

As for Allen and Lombardi, there may have been players that were called "Allen" or "Lombardi" guys...but I wasn't aware of any.

Yea we have our own in a Mr. Rod Gardener. His hands are more of a mush. The ball will get into the hands and then just fall out.

Don't need him and don't want him, I live in Steeler Country and watch him alot, he is a version of Rod Gardner, only Flexico has a bad attitude, Gibbs will get Gardner catching again!!, Stay away from this one.

As far as Burress goes if we get him great if we don't great, he is no big need.
Now as far as being a Gibbs Guy, while giving 110% and being a Team player are quality's that every player on the team should have. The most important quality in being a Gibb's Guy is character, Joe likes good character people. You can be cocky or flaky but if you mess up, (remember Barry Wilbon) you will be gone. Being a Spurrior guy is an insult. Lombardi wasn't here long enough to make Lomardi Guy's, and the team was full of Allen Guy's in his day. They were called the Over The Hill Gang.

Not ALL players JG coached were considered "Joe Gibbs guys". These guys are a special breed. In fact, I'd say that there are only a handful on each team JG coached.

"Gibbs guys" are all about one thing. HEART. They put it ALL on the line to win. They might not be the best athlete in the world but they will NEVER give up. They either succeed or die trying.

Two prime examples of this I can give are Gary Clark and Joe Jacoby. Clark was a pip-squeak who had bad hamstrings most of his Redskin career. They were pulled so often he developed scar tissue the size of a tennis ball on his upper hamstring. Yet, every week he went out and gave his all and was a 2 time Pro-bowler. Jacoby was undrafted free agent yet he busted his tail and became a 4 time pro-bowler. That was just his football life. In his personal life he suffers from a severe speech impediment. While he won't win any awards for being an orator, he has worked extremely had to correct it and now hosts a radio show. Forget football, overcoming handicaps like this is truly the stuff of champions.

Have you ever heard the expression, "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of fight in the dog"?? If not, learn it and live it.

This expression typifies a "Gibbs player". When the chips are down and you have to get that last little bit of something from somewhere, the guy with the most heart usually wins.

That's where JG's expression "Gut check" come from. "Gut check time" typically refers to the end of a game when everyone is exhausted and you need to reach down deep in your sole to find whatever it is you need to accomplish your goal. In other words, suck it up and get the job done.

I'd rather have all of these type players on my team then a bunch of whiney &%^#$*'s who are SUPER talented but don't have the burning desire to win. Cuz when the chips are down it's these type that will fail more often than not.

It's all about wining. Nothing else matters. Winners push through the pain on the way to greater glory.

This is what Joe Gibbs is all about and he wants players like him.

Do you think he doesn't get tired putting in 20 hour days and sleeping 4 hours a night at "The Park" on an uncomfortable cot? He does, but his desire to WIN (or maybe his fear of failure) is so strong so he does what he has to do to get the job done.

Plaxico is one of the top "players to stay away from" in the league. Plus, he's gonna be expensive, so there's no real reason to jeopardize the cap even more.

I think it would be great to sign him! We could really use some more wide receivers.

I was kidding - maybe I should tone down the sarcasm. Then again maybe its part of Snyder's evil plot to eventually sign every wide receiver in the league and field a team comprised of nothing but wide receivers.

I can see him talking to other GMs now "Wide receivers? Yeah we got wide receivers! Tall ones, short ones, slow ones, ex Florida Gators ones, some with talent and some without. I'd give the wide receivers away but my wife won't let me."
