Best/Worst Personnel moves in Redskin History
What are the best and worst trades/drafts/FA pickups in redskin history? (players only--Gibbs and Beathard don't count).
Some obvious options:
Best: FA signing of FA Joe Jacoby
Lachey for Schroeder
Worst:Drafting Desmond Howard
drafting Heath Schuler
FA signing of Deon Sanders
My choices:
Best: Its a tie
1. Sonny Jurgensen for Norm Snead
2. Diron Talbert, Jack Pardee, Mo Pottios, Maxie Baughen, Richie Pettibon, Jeff Jordan, John Wilbur, 71 5th for Marlin Mckeever, 71 1st and 3rd, 72 3rd,4th, 5th,6th,7th (became the core of the over the hill gang)
Worst:
Marlin McKeever (jeez that name keeps coming up) and 68 7th for Paul Krause

I am in a state of ecstasy! Never mind that nonsense about euphoria and so on. It is sheer, unadulterated, uncompromising ecstasy!

Hkiss44: did we get both those picks in that deal with NO? If so that deal rates right up there as one of the best. Have to see how the deal works out over the career (add Portis to the mix, since that is now part of the equation).
Your right, Andre Johnson sucked, but not the worst.
Vinny Cerrato? As they used to say in Jeopardy: Remember the category please.[/quote]

the worst draft desmond howard, along with that other great qb heath shuler.
the worst free agent pickups
1-deon sanders-glad he got what he wanted.
2-bruce smith and i might want to add dana stubblefield in that as well.the alltime nfl sack leader and defensive player of the year really played well in burgundy and gold didn,t they.yeah right.
best draft well hard to say really.there has been some solid drafts not great drafts so i will name a couple players here like maybe lavar arrington, chris samuels fred smoot d mac.and i,m still waiting to see their full potential.the right coaching staff will take care of that problem.
best free agent pickups well i would say lachey ,jacoby.i know there are a few others but i can,t remember at the moment.
but the desmond howard fiasco still sticks in my sides.
glad heath turned out to be the quarterback he thought he was going to be cause evidently the skins didn,t see the other side at the time they drafted him either.

Suferskin: forgot about Riggins and Marshall. good picks.
Dave Butz was another one. I think we traded, like, two number ones for him. for a couple of years in the 70's that trade was considered a bust (so was Riggins, since Allen wasn't using him as a feature runner--remember Mike Thomas?)
Both turned out to be big time hits though in the 80s

i guess you have to say that riggins was the best but i also think wilbur marshall was a great one too.
sean gilbert was a bust no doubt about that but for wilbur marshall i enjoyed his skin days -he was all over the place like he was in chicago.sean gilbert on the other hand was terrible .

you,re right i guess 11years of misery put me in this state of mind but seriously i was a bit confused at the time i posted that so thanks again for clearing that up for me.i do remember the skins trading more than drafting during gibbs first tenure here.
i also remember jay playing for the raiders after he played here.

modern era:
coaching:
best - hiring gibbs.
second best - re-hiring gibbs.
worst - firing turner with four games left in a potential playoff season.
second worst - the ol' ball coach.
player:
best - gibbs brining riggins out of retirement.
second best - signing doug williams out of obscurity.
worst - letting stephen davis get away.
second worst - the free agent class of george, deion, smith, and carrier.
old school:
coaching:
best - lombardi, he saved the franchise.
second best - hiring george allen, he continued to build on what vince started.
player:
best - drafting sammy baugh, he changed the game.
second best - bringing in sam huff. he brought cred to the D and we weakend a division rival at the same time.

Dave Butz was a monster. Nobody ran on number 65.
TWO of the best and most unheralded moves were picking up Jumpy Geathers(one best pash rushing dt's ever-THE FORKLIFT!)and Tim Johnson(DT)...If you Skin lovers remember in the late 80's our D-LINE was our weakpoint but these two acquistions solidified our line and gave us a toughness upfront we lacked since the prime days of Butz and Grant..And after viewing the tape a thousand times since Gibbs was signed i can attest to the fact that both players(GEATHERS AND JOHNSON)had outstanding Super Bowls vs Buffalo

Warmother: Desmond Howard could be a twofer: worst trade and worst draft!
Redskinsrule56: forgot about Tom Carter, that was a bad one.
Another bad first round choice: Anybody remember Bobby Wilson? That was a bad first pick.

As Kepp Choppin said
Yes, Ernie Davis looked to be the next Jim Brown. If he had lived, I think the trade would have been even.
But don't forget that we got both Bobby Mitchell and Lightning Leroy Jackson, who had been the Brown's number 1 pick. As I remember it, the Redskins and the Browns had agreed to the deal before the draft, since the Redskins had the first pick; the Skins told the Browns who to draft.
Jackson was the fastest WR the Redskins had ever had...among the worst hands, worst routes, one of the worst players ever. (As Casey Stengel said, you can look it up!)
I'm not sure why this hasn't been mentioned yet:
Best move:
Bobby Mitchell for Ernie Davis, before the '62 season.
(Not Davis's fault - - he died of leukemia before he ever played a down in the NFL).
