Why Sean Taylor will be a Redskin

Post by oafusp »

Many people are quick to say the D Line is the biggest problem on the Redskins. If that is the case you cannot draft a D Lineman in the 2004 draft with the #5 overall pick...you would have to trade down since that D Lineman would still be available and you'd get an extra pick in the draft.

You could then move down again...since there is such a debate about the difference between Harris/Wilfork/Starks...any one of those guys should be decent tackles. Same thing with Udeze/Will Smith.

So if the Skins go with D Line that means they would trade down. And trading down from the #5 overall pick to get a good but not great prospect does not have "Front Page" written on it as Snyder prefers.

The fact is that at #5 Sean Taylor will likely still be there. And the Skins should take him. All they need to do is write SEAN TAYLOR on their card, hand it to Paul Tagliabue, wait for the announcement, and call it a day (no more picks in day 1). They would not have to look back or 2nd guess.

But more importantly the Redskins would have a superstar in the making in the backfield for years to come. Some say Taylor is the next Ronnie Lott, or that Taylor make Roy Williams look average...we'll see.
What everyone must remember is that the DRAFT is for the FUTURE. And while Iffy Ohalete is decent he is not spectacular. Iffy Ohalete is also a RESTRICTED Free Agent, meaning next season he will be an UN-Restricted Free Agent. Which also means Safety needs to be addressed now if not next season anyway.

So the question is, would you rather have a 1-in-10 years Safety Sean Taylor....Or draft a good safety next year that might play like any other safety?

You've gotta factor in that the Skins might not have such a high first round pick for years to come...and you also have to factor in that in the last 2 years the NFC East has been filled with HI-Talent Tight Ends...Giants = Shockey, Eagles = LJ Smith, Cowboys = Jason Witten...

Yes...our 3 Division Rivals have all drafted high pick Tight Ends the last 2 seasons. Gibbs COULD draft Kellen Winslow and make the NFC East "even" in TE talent...but Gibbs doesn't use the TE that much and would only make it "even".
But if Gibbs drafts Sean Taylor then the super safety would counter the super Tight End's the Giants, Eagles, and Cowboys drafted...every division game would feature Sean Taylor shutting down Shockey, Smith, or Witten...while Lavar and Marcus fly around killing people.

Or...maybe we can get an average D Tackle and have the Tight Ends of the NFC East burn Iffy 8 times this year...then we can draft the "Next Sam Shade" in 2005 since we missed out on Taylor in 2004.

You know what my vote is....

i totally agree. first of all sean taylor is the consesus BEST defense player in this years draft (if not the best player at any position) and we NEED a safety. i know we need help on the D-line but there isn't any julius peppers or terrells suggs in this years draft. i just don't think we should risk passing on a guy this good. and i also agree that we need someone who can cover a tight end...gosh, shockey kills us everytime we play the giants. wouldn't it be nice if before shockey gets up and celebrates a 5 yard first down that taylor knocks the taste out his mouth!!!? :thump: so i say the only reason to trade down is if taylor is already gone @ #5.

yep, Iffy is a free agent next season any way...might as well get a stud safety now since there might not be one next year!

I just can't take watching bootleg after bootleg burn us.

I only hope that Sean Taylor is still available. If the Chargers don't take a QB, he might go before us.

I agree as well. pick up Taylor at number 5. he hits like Atwater and has hands most recievers would like to have. Another Taylor isn't coming along for a really long time. I say draft him and see what we can get (DE/DT) in June when the next cuts are made. Winslow's out of the question IMO. I hate him

Although I agree we need to take Taylor there is a safety (I cant think of his name right now) for UNLV that is supposedly even better than Sean Taylor. But he will be gone by the time we pick next year anyway. SEAN TAYLOR all the way.

If we had a third or fourth round pick, I'd say grab Tony Bua in a heartbeat. He has great grades, good strength, matches up well with guys up almost a foot taller than him. He also hits like a demon.

My favorite story is when Tony Bua was just settling into the SS position this year and we were playing Ole Miss and we were still in the game.

Well, good old Eli Manning was, already, having a good day near the end of the first quarter he threw a pass to, I think, Chris Collins who caught it right after making a quit cut past Ahman Carrol and... That was it. Right now, I want you to think of some crazy Japanese guy going Kamikaze...

Right after that catch, Bua exploded into Chris Collins like a and the force of the blast also claimed Ahman Carroll, at that moment, who was recovering from being burned barely a second before. He got caught in the blast.

Everything from helmets to shoes to wrist bands went flying after the massive hit. Seconds later, Ahman Carroll was slowly walking off the field while Ole Miss coaches bent over that poor WR. Left me laughing at what should of won hit of the year.

I have heard Bua is projected to be a special teamer for his first few years. I understand you like the guy (you are from AR) but drafting him would not make sense since he would not be an upgrade from Iffy Ohalete.

Sean Taylor will start immediately and Iffy is starting now.
Tony Bua will likely play special teams for the first year or two...then hopefully contribute like Adam Archuletta of the Rams has...(turned into a Beast).

If the Skins had other picks in rounds 3-5 they would use them on other areas...the safety position is an exception since a guy like Sean Taylor is available...otherwise we would just stick with Iffy.

No, no, no. I don't think Bua has the ability to be a starter. I do think he would be a super backup, dominate on ST, and play at LB at the end of the season if the injury list gets long enough and Gibbs is desperate.

Also, I can actually see him starting at SS on 4th and short or in the goal line.

Also, let me List some of his accomplishments, so that I can feel good about myself and one of my mid-major college football team's NFL prospects;
-All-SEC OLB/FS - Will, has, and can play SS.
-Butkus Award watch list for the nation's most outstanding linebacker.
-Career tackle leader at Arkansas with 408 stops, passing former Razorback and current Seattle Seahawks free safety Ken Hamlin's 381 record.
-Several coaches have likened Bua to a Pro Bowl safety, hard hitting John Lynch.
-(To Answer ST Player Comments)Alabama OC/QB Coach Dave Rader said, "He looks to have the makings of an excellent special-teams player...And the NFL guys are going to love him for that."
-November 6, 2003 was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week.
-Excels in the class room, garnering several academic honors.
